What is the Clavi-Cut?

Published 18th Nov 2024 by Josie Jackson

Bobs have consistently been a client favourite in the salon, but for those looking for a little more versatility, the Clavi-Cut could be perfect. To help you master this haircut, here’s everything you need to know – from the hair types and textures that best complement the cut, to the pressure points to watch out for.

What is the Clavi-Cut?

Named after the clavicle (also known as the collar bone), the Clavi-Cut is a long bob (or lob) that finishes at a defined point and is usually graduated towards the front, further emphasising the clavicle. As Teresa Weller from Teresa Weller Hair Art notes, we’re officially in our bob era, with variations such as the Preppy Bob and the Boyfriend Bob constantly trending online. “The Clavi-Cut is perfect for anyone wanting to embrace the bob trend without sacrificing too much length,” she adds. The shorter nature of this cut also makes it a great option for those looking to improve the health of their hair, with Gina Conway suggesting that this could be a great way to transform long, lacklustre hair into a strong and healthy shape. Another selling point to the Clavi-Cut is its versatility. Nicholas Fletcher-Holmes, Creative and Education Ambassador for Kao Salon Division UK, explains: “The added length allows for versatile styling, whether dressed up for an evening or tied back for the gym or school run.”

What Hair Types Complement the Clavi-Cut – and What Pressure Points Should You Watch Out For?

One of the perks of the Clavi-Cut is that it adds body and volume, which makes it ideal for those with fine hair. However, JR Slane from The House of Keune by Bloom explains that when cutting this style, it's crucial to avoid face-framing layers, which could distract from the cut’s main feature – the length resting at the collarbone. “Instead, focus on maintaining a clean, elongated silhouette that enhances the 'old money' aesthetic. This approach preserves the sleekness of the hairstyle, ensuring it remains elegant and refined, while also ensuring it doesn’t lose too much weight.” Meanwhile, Emma Simmons from Salon 54 shares her tips for cutting curly hair, explaining: “It’s essential to consider shrinkage when cutting, as it can affect the final length and shape.”

What Else is there to Know about the Clavi-Cut?

Beyond the pressure points of the cut, Gina explains: “One thing you should consider when opting for this look is that you can, and should, have fun with colour. As the cut is relatively conservative, it gives the opportunity to experiment with textures and colour palettes to gear up the style.”

As always, it’s also worth speaking to your client about how they see themself styling and maintaining their hair on a daily basis. While the Clavi-Cut is a defined length, it can be a great starting point to discuss other similar length cuts, with Fergal Doyle, owner of Fergal Doyle Hair, noting: “It's essential to be mindful of the look the client is going for and to choose a length they feel comfortable with. If this ends up being a little longer than the clavicle, that’s fine.”
