Spargo Hairdressing in Brentwood has relocated and relaunched; with salon owner Ian Marshall reverting to his former career as builder to complete the transformation.
Established for almost ten years, Spargo Hairdressing recently expanded into new premises and it took just nine weeks and £70,000 to transform the former shop - thanks in part to Ian's handiwork.
"For the first six weeks we had fourteen people working in the salon from seven different trades," said Ian. "It was only by drawing on my past skills as a builder and a designer that this project came in on time and to such a high specification. I put a lot of that down to my OCD (seriously!) and Dominic Bowden, a builder mate for 18 years. He literally worked with me for free for nine weeks. I worked 5 days a week on hair and then did all-nighters at the salon over the weekends – it was exhausting but I can't tell you how proud of the result I am and I am so thankful to Dom, who honoured us by cutting the ribbon to open the salon."
The results of all this hard work make for an impressive yet elegant interior, inspired by a meal at
Smith's of Smithsfield in London; raw and industrial but still warm and welcoming.
Details include an 'estuary'-inspired palette of soft natural hues, open fires and handbuilt styling stations of reclaimed timber and brick. The backwash area is separated from the main floor, with soothing green walls and a water fountain adding to the relaxing mood.
“We took a bit of something old and made it into something very new," says Ian. "We paid attention to every detail - right down to the fact that we had 368 bricks left over and used 342 to clad the old reception desk to bring that into the salon in a new way – I couldn’t be happier with the result, the clients are loving the environment, as are the team: new beginnings with old friends. Perfect!"
