Hairdressing is a great career choice
Hairdressing icon Patrick Cameron talks about the things that really get him riled about hairdressing and some of the many highlights of his illustrious career.
What do you feel are the most important elements of training?
Close contact and good old fashioned practical hands on training. This type of training gets guaranteed results.
What common misconceptions about hairdressing as a career most annoy you?
That it's the last career to choose when all else has fails, this really, really annoys me.
I know plenty of University students out of work but don't know too many good hairdressers out of work.
Parents need to understand that hairdressing is a trade and to have a trade in these uncertain times is the best thing for anybody to encourage.
Remember, no one can take a trade from you, it's something to have for the rest of your life.
Tell us about some of your career highlights...I have many. From getting my first standing ovation at my first big show at the World Congress in London, to spending an evening sitting next to Vidal Sassoon just talking with him, to appearing at the Kremlin in front of 5000 people.
My career has been varied, exciting and fulfilling. Every day is different and no two the same.
What ambitions do you still have?
Loads. My school in London is going well but I still want to build on it!
My educational books and DVDs have found huge international success and my shows go from strength to strength and I want to continue building on that.
In order to achieve international success you need to work long hours and be away from home a lot so my down time is becoming a main focus and balancing that with my career is an ambition I have worked on for a long time.
It's important for anyone to have a work/downtime balance.
