5 Autumn Hair Trends Set to Dominate in 2024

The warmer months are drawing to a close, and with that comes a whole host of new hair trends. So ahead of cosy season, Tom Smith, hair trend forecaster and International Creative Colour Director at evo shares his top autumn 2024 hair trend predictions for the months ahead…

Curtain Bangs

As seen on Daisy Edgar-Jones, Sabrina Carpenter, Jenna Ortega and Matilda Djerf, curtain bangs are a firm favourite for the season ahead. Tom says: “Curtain bangs are a great choice for those clients with a heart shaped face or a larger forehead, as the style frames the eyes and is a great ‘cosy’ look for the cooler months.”

And as fringes and bangs that sit on the face tend to get oily more quickly, Tom recommends, after using a round barrelled brush to curve the fringe towards the nose, use a light styling powder, dry texturising spray, or a dry shampoo to add control and keep the fringe airy and fresh for longer.

Tiara Bun

Described as “a regal bun – polished or textured – that sits on the crown of the head,” this style is a great choice to lift the face and add height and glamour to a client’s look. Secured and swept up, or with loose strands left around the face to soften the look, the Tiara Bun offers versatility to suit a wide range of clients.

“This is great for those who like a practical style or who prefer their hair secured out of their face,” Tom tells us. “This also helps to lift the face and contour the cheekbones and is an easy style for clients to do themselves at home.”

Cloud Curls

We’re talking, natural, airy, and textured waves or curls with a halo of intentional fluff that brings a youthful, ethereal and carefree energy. This look is ideal for those clients with longer and naturally textured hair and will carry over a little bit of summer to the autumn months.

Tom says: “Use your client’s natural texture if they have it or create a similar style by braiding the hair after rough drying just before it has completely dried/cooled. Leave it to set and loosen with your fingers.” For a more polished look: “Use a small curling iron with small sections and alternate the direction you twist the hair. Finish with a styling powder or a texturising spray and shake upside down for the airy fluffy finish.”

Tucked Bob

We know bobs have been hot on the agenda for some time now, and the Tucked Bob can work on all lengths and styles of bob. “This look can be achieved by simply tucking one or both sides behind the ears,” Tom says. “This can have an androgynous or business-like energy and is great for widening a narrow or long face or helping to improve the look of thickness in finer hair types.”

This look works best on hair that has a bit of product in, as freshly washed or fluffy hair can be hard to secure behind the ear. Tom recommends: “Use a volume spray or mousse before blow-drying for extra style support and use a strong hold hair spray on the hair around the ear to secure. For a more stable result, use a small clip or slide behind the ear to hold the hair in place.”

Laser Cut Bob

And we’re back with another bob style! A perfectly measured, sharp and precise, one length bob that sits between the top of the shoulder and the corner of the jaw, this style works best with a middle parting and can be combined with a fringe.

Coming with versatility, the length can be adjusted to suit many face shapes. “For a softer result, go for chin length or longer, or for a bolder alternative, go above the chin,” says Tom. “Best styled straight or with minimal texture, this is a great option for those with fine hair as the cut will increase the appearance of thickness and density in the hair.”

The best products for this look are ones that keep the hair smoother, such as anti-frizz creams and serums.
