Birmingham's bustling Clothes Show Live played host to the 2010 Young Hairdresser of the Year, presented by HJi and supported by Your Hair.

Twenty finalists, all under the age of 30, and with between three and five years experience as stylist, competed in a live final in front of a packed audience in the Clothes Show's lively hair and beauty hall.

Each had already impressed judges with a photographic entry, and on the day had just 45 minutes to recreate their image live on stage, with the added pressure of being watched by the enthusiastic crowd - and a panel of industry experts as judges.

Mark Leeson, Tim Scott-Wright, and Jamie Stevens joined representatives of HJi and Your Hair, to quiz the finalists as they worked, and inspect the quality of their cuts, colours, and finishing techniques.

All of the young hairdressers demonstrated an incredibly high standard of work, and the judges' job was made even more difficult owing to the mixture of styles - everything from on-trend crops to retro updos was presented, with some extremely well executed creative colour too.

After two live shows, the six highest-scoring finalists were announced: James Theaker, Mark Scott; Benedict O'Kelly, Colour Lounge; Lauren Sala, Rainbow Room Uddingston; Joseph Ferraro, Halo; Benjamin Kristian, Zullo & Holland; and Raychel Farren, Mode.

The final six then presented their models in front of a 4000-strong audience in the Clothes Show's Fashion Theatre, in a high energy show introduced by TV favourite, Gok Wan, and with a special guest appearance from Only Way Is Essex reality star, Kirk Norcross.

James Theaker of Mark Scott was named runner-up for his on-trend auburn style, with Raychel Farren of Mode announced as winner for her skilfully coloured vibrant purple crop.

Raychel follows in the footsteps of Emily Hart from Errol Douglas, Kate Hubbard from Royston Blythe, and Megan Zarrabi of Hob Salons. She wins a trophy, a cheque for £1,000, cover shoots for HJ and Your Hair, and of course the kudos of being named the most talented young hairdresser in the country.
