With plenty of pool days ahead this season, online retailer Notino thought it would be a good time to remind your clients about the harsh pool chemicals that can wreak havoc on the hair. Check our Notino’s tips on how to protect hair from chlorine exposure and minimise the damaging effects...
What is Chlorine Damage?
The chemicals in chlorine strip our hair and scalp of natural oils (sebum) and have a big impact on the hair's cuticle and keratin – the hair protein that keeps our hair healthy, bouncy and shiny. The increased amount of chlorine found in pools makes our hair dry, rough and weak. This leads to hair breakage, split ends and colour changes as a result of chemical reactions, both on natural and dyed hair.
How to Prevent Chlorine Damage?
Chlorine damage cannot be prevented completely, but with the following tips, it can be minimised, even if your clients go swimming often.
● Pre-soak the hair – Hair soaks liquid in seconds; this means if your clients wet their hair with clean tap water before stepping into the pool, it may help to prevent it from absorbing excess chlorine.
● Gentle hair cleansers – Deep cleanse clarifying shampoos can make all the difference on post-swim hair, helping to eliminate any drying chemicals from root to tip.
● Leave-in conditioners – You can also recommend your clients apply leave-in conditioners to help from a protective layer on the hair.
● Swim cap – Wearing a swim cap is one of the best peices of advice you can give your customers who visit pools regularly.
Notino's tip: With increased hair washing after every day at the pool, recommend your customers use dry shampoo on the days they are not swimming during vacation, to help prevent overwashing.
How to Fix Chlorine-Damaged Hair?
Chlorine damage is not permanent and there are plenty of ways to support your clients on their journey back to healthy hair.
● Wide-toothed comb – Wet hair tangles and breaks easily so it should be brushed very gently. Recommend your clients use a wide-toothed comb to detangle hair after a swim.
● Avoid heat styling – During the summer season, it is best to let the hair completely air dry to avoid drying out the hair even more with the hair dryer.
