It’s been revealed that 2025 is shaping up to be all about brunettes. And to get your clients inspired, Laura Elliott, Head Stylist and Educator at Neäl & Wølf, has revealed the must-have brunette shades for the year ahead, and how to tailor them to your client’s skin tone.
Mushroom Brown
“Mushroom brown hair is a cool toned, earthy shade of brunette that will trend in 2025 for its versatility. There’s room for dimension with silver highlights, balayage, and subtle ashy tones,” Laura says. “The shade falls within the medium colour family. Unlike other shades of brown, mushroom brown doesn’t lean distinctly warm or cool, offering a balanced mix of undertones. If your client decides on this shade, it’s important to add a mix of cool and warm tones and steer clear of the natural brown hue, as this won’t give you the customised undertone mixture found in the mushroom brown shade.”
Cinnamon Brown
“Cinnamon brown is predicted to be the go-to brunette shade that incorporates popular red and copper tones without committing to full red. It’s the perfect in-between colour for those wanting a change,” continues Laura. “The cinnamon brunette colour is a warm, glossy, multidimensional shade of brown with subtle red or golden undertones for an overall vibrant and sun kissed appearance. This colour is ideal for those clients looking to switch up their hair with some warmth but not necessarily a red and suits those with medium to tan skin as the richness of the shade creates a balanced and glowing look.”
Espresso Brown
Coined as the ‘Espresso Martini’ hair colour – a rich dark chocolate shade of brown which stylists predict will trend in 2025 as a popular choice for natural brunettes looking to subtly enhance their hair.
“The espresso brown hair trend will look best on clients who have darker natural hair and want something low maintenance while still having a little dimension,” says Laura. “This shade will particularly complement those with a medium skin tone – glossy, rich chocolate brown colours like espresso brown will suit cool undertones and help to bring out blue eyes.”
Toffee Brown
Offering warmth and shine, ‘Cinder Toffee Brunette’ is the latest take on natural brown and is set to trend next year for its expensive and chic appeal.
“Toffee brunette combines an intense golden caramel tone with a deeper mid-brunette base,” Laura tells us. “The blend of chocolate, caramel and gold hues create a reflective, youthful shine that’s perfect for those seeking a sun-kissed glow without the upkeep of bright blonde hair. This warm shade is particular flattering on clients with lighter olive skin tones, as its golden undertones enhance the natural warmth in the skin. Yellow and green undertones are brought to life by the rich caramel highlights, while the deeper brunette base provides a contrast that complements and balances the complexion.”
