Prescription and promotion of aftercare will ensure clients' colour looks fresh and vibrant long after their salon visit, as well as boosting their average spend.
As well as products, supplying your clients with the knowledge necessary to maintain their colour will ensure they continue to be a walking advertisement for your salon.
Brooke Bohan, co-founder of specialist colour salon Four London, reveals his expert advice for ensuring all of your clients leave the salon educated and excited about aftercare products.
"One of the most important questions we ask a client during their colour consultation is: are you able to maintain your colour and the continuity of your colour in between salon visits? Their answer is paramount to the technique and products we use. Aftercare is the key issue for client and technician: key to the client maintaining the colour; and key to the technician being able to do what the client wants.
"Colour fade can occur between salon visits, so we tell our clients that colour-friendly products are essential to prolong the colour and prevent colour fade. However, it is important to explain why or they will think you are just trying to sell them a product.
"We are in the process of providing colour-care leaflets that each new client will be given to help them maintain their colour. This includes advice on using heated appliances, caring for hair in the sun, and deep conditioning tips.
"We telephone our colour clients a few weeks after they have been to the salon to check how they are coping with their colour, to ensure they are happy, and to answer any questions."
Three top tips for aftercare
1. Advise clients on the right products to look after their hair. If it is coloured, then it's important to use products formulated for coloured hair.
2. Contact clients a few weeks after their appointment to ensure they are happy with their new colour.
3. Offer your clients retail products to keep colour vibrant between salon visits.
