Once the preserve of schoolgirls and sporty types, the ponytail has well and truly earned its place as a catwalk classic. Season after season it reappears on the runways with countless finishes, textures and positions enabling it to be reinvented for any collection or mood. Whether worn grungy or girly, preppy or powerful, it's a look that transcends trends - and a look that isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
Here's how the look was worn on the catwalks for Autumn/Winter 2012 - and the looks your clients will be clamouring for;

Grunge girl
As seen at: Giles
Textured lengths, saturated with salt spray or spray wax are secured low at the nape of the neck in a nonchalant loose ponytail.
Pull out sections from around the face or loosen the band to create a baggy texture at the nape for that oh-so-cool, effortless feel.
Contrast the grungy finish with an opulent oversized bow for the Giles look, created by the Toni & Guy team.

East Meets West

The ponytail that's not quite a ponytail, this take on the trend sees hair sectioned multiple times before being twisted, wrapped or bound around the head.
Inspired by this season's obsession with all things Oriental, these ponytails are more intricate than usual for a look that's more couture than casual.
At Cédric Charlier, Laurent Philippon created an elegant take on the trend with contrasting matte and shine finishes to highlight the detail.

Pretty Perfect
As seen at: Thomas Tait
Worn high on the crown for maximum bounce, this feminine style has a pageant queen feel - all polished shine and pristine curls.
Perfect for encouraging glossy girls to experiment with hair-up styles, the longer and thicker the hair, the better for this ponytail.
Curled lengths add the perfect prettified finish, while at Thomas Tait session stylist James Pecis used velvet scrunchies to add a fun twist.

Sleek and Chic
As seen at: DKNY
Give ponytails a grown-up makeover with super sleek, polished lengths and a luxurious, statement slide to secure.
Whether worn with a deep side-parting for an androgynous feel or swept back straight from the forehead, this professional pony should be clamped at the nape and left to hang smoothly down the spine for a minimalist feel.
At DKNY, Eugene Souleiman created an elegant style fastened with a wide, black barrette - much better than an old elastic.
