Hairdressing and Beauty Sector Make Headway in Parliament

Hairdressing and Beauty Sector Make Headway in Parliament

Updated on 13th Jun 2025 by Charlotte Grant-West

The hair and beauty sector wants the Government to urgently level the playing field and halve the VAT salons pay on labour costs to 10%, in order to overcome the existential crisis it is facing.

The good news is, is that it is being heard loud and clear, according to the British Hair Consortium (BHC).

What is the British Hair Consortium?

The BHC aims to bring the voice of salon, barbering, and beauty professionals straight into the heart of Parliament.

What is the British Hair Consortium Doing?

Collette Osborne from The British Hair Consortium comments: “We’ve already successfully engaged directly with over 10% of all MPs, and, for the first time ever, secured a dedicated Parliamentary debate focused solely on the real-life challenges facing salon owners across the UK."

Julia Lopez MP recently led a debate in parliament highlighting these issues and asking the Chancellor and Business Secretary to take immediate action to make sure we do not lose these businesses from our communities. This debate would not have happened without the communication and campaigning from the British Hair Consortium, and all its members who have been fighting for change.

This landmark debate brought cross-party attention to the struggles of the hair and beauty sector, from apprenticeships and rising costs to the confusion around employment status and the future of employment. Its progress is immense, and the British Hair Consortium has proudly planted the industry firmly on the political map.

In order to make change, the British Hair Consortium is appealing to every single salon owner, freelancer, educator, and all supporters to stand alongside.

The goal? A nationwide push to get even more MPs listening.

“We need every MP in the country to have a dialogue with all the salon owners in their constituency, this is the only way they will know about our devastating situation,” says Collette.

“We want thousands of voices writing to their MPs, sharing real stories and calling for urgent action to save apprentices, save salons, support freelancers, and protect the future of our industry. We do all the work; we write the letters for you and support you at every step,” she adds.
