Frizz-free curls with the right products and techniques

michelle-thompson.jpgIt doesn't matter what type of curl your clients wear they all want the same result - soft, smooth, frizz-free and healthy-looking curls. And with the rise in mixed race hair and coarse hair, it's essential the right products and techniques are used to get the look.

"For people with tight curls it's best to keep it natural. There are three styles which I think work best. These are short and strong with an angular shape to the hair; a longer length to allow for natural bounce and an asymmetric style which takes away the roundness which a tight curl can often create.

"As long as you let it dry naturally and stick with these three styles you shouldn't go too far wrong. Products are essential at maintaining this type of hair so make sure and use a regular conditioning treatment.

For managing this type of hair at home, use products to put moisture back in to the hair, such as a hair mask once a week. You want the cuticle to be as smooth as possible and use a good quality serum when styling. Often people with this type of hair tend to constantly rake their fingers through it. The best advice is to just leave it to do its thing. You want to do enough to it to shape it and then after that just leave it alone."

Best styling techniques:

"For a shorter style, cut the hair in to an angular shape to create a strong style. For longer hair, allow for a natural bounce in the curl and cut a longer layer as the curls often bounce back up. For something more creative, opt for an asymmetric style, which takes away from the natural roundness that tight curls can often create."
