British Hairdressing Awards Launch Wales Hairdresser of the Year Category

British Hairdressing Awards Launch Wales Hairdresser of the Year Category

Updated on 19th Mar 2026 by Sian Jones

The British Hairdressing Awards, sponsored by Schwarzkopf Professional, have introduced a new Wales Hairdresser of the Year category, marking a significant moment for the Welsh hair industry.

Previously part of the Wales and South West category, Welsh stylists will now have a dedicated platform to showcase their work and compete against other hairdressers from across the country. The category will cover entrants from Anglesey, Cardiganshire, Carmarthenshire, Denbighshire, Flintshire, Gwynedd, Monmouthshire, Pembrokeshire and Powys, celebrating the creativity from salons throughout Wales.

The addition forms part of a wider set of updates to the awards and reflects the continued growth and influence of Welsh hairdressers within the UK industry.

Welsh Hairdressers Welcome the New Category

For many in the Welsh hairdressing community, the new category represents long-awaited recognition for the region. Michelle Summers Davies of Michelle Davies Hair and Wales and South West Hairdresser of the Year finalist 2025, 2024 and 2023 welcomed the announcement. “My initial reaction to the news that there is a new Wales Hairdresser of the Year category was that it’s absolutely brilliant! Wales may be a small country, but the standard of hairdressing here is incredibly high. Creating a dedicated category recognises the strength of the Welsh industry and gives artists the platform they deserve to showcase their work on their own stage. It’s extremely important that this category has been introduced. Welsh hairdressers are producing world-class work, but we’re often competing within much bigger regions. Having a Wales category shines a light on the talent, creativity and individuality coming out of our country. It gives Welsh artists something to really aim for and celebrates the identity of our industry here.”

Ken Picton, South West and Wales Hairdresser of the Year 2023, has shared: "I think the move to a standalone Wales Hairdresser of the Year category in the British Hairdressing Awards is a fantastic move. It gives a much clearer identity for people who actually work within Wales. I’m so pleased that Wales gets its own clear identity as a region – along with Northern Ireland and Scotland or London, for instance. I think you'll see a lot more people enter now that are based in Wales. I’m excited!"

Tilly Capel, Operations Director, Lara Johnson Lifestyle also commented on the importance of the change for Welsh hairdressing: "This change is something we’ve passionately advocated for over the past 30 years. Having our own dedicated category is a powerful recognition of the talent, creativity, and identity within our industry in Wales. It brings Wales in line with Scotland, Northern Ireland, and the many regional categories across England. It not only celebrates established salons, but also creates new opportunities and inspiration for the next generation of Welsh hairdressers. It gives them a platform to be seen, something to strive for, and a real sense of pride in representing Wales. Diolch Hairdressers Journal."

Casey Coleman, owner Chair Salons and finalist for Wales and South West Hairdresser of the Year 2025, 2024, 2023 shared how mcuh a Wales Hairdresser of the Year category will mean for the next generation of hairdressers: "I'm very proud to be Welsh. I'm patriotically Welsh. And there are so many other Welsh hairdressers before me who haven't had the opportunity to compete in a Wales only category. So it's a special moment. We were the only country in the UK not to have our own category and I think it's about time and I'm really excited to see a lot more people entering. People that have never entered before because they now don't feel so overwhelmed or intimidated because they're not competing against the south west either. It's a great opportunity for anybody and I'm super grateful. Thank you to Hairdressers Journal for allowing us to be patriotically and passionately Welsh."

Nicolas James Tucker, winner of Wales & South West Hairdresser of the Year in 2024, has called the announcement a fantastic move: "Separating Wales from the South West region gives Welsh hairdressing the recognition it truly deserves. There is an incredible amount of talent, individuality, and creativity coming out of Wales, and it’s important that this is seen, celebrated, and judged on its own merit. This change creates space for that talent to be recognised on a national level, rather than being grouped into a wider region."

The current British Hairdresser of the Year Efi Davies also commented on the new category: "The introduction of a Wales Hairdresser of the Year category is really exciting news for our industry. The British Hairdressing Awards have always been the benchmark for excellence in the UK with Global recognition and adding Wales to the regional categories means that incredible talent from every corner of the UK now has its rightful place on the stage. Welsh hairdressers bring amazing skills, creativity and artistry to their work, and they deserve to be seen, recognised and celebrated in their own right. This new category elevates the Welsh hairdressing community and creates a powerful message that world-class hairdressing doesn't belong to one postcode.
And for the industry as a whole, that can only be a good thing."
