The balletcore trend – which made a comeback at fashion week – is set to be the look of the 2023 festive season, currently trending with 13.5k hashtags for #balletcorehair as people opt for showstopping outfits. With ballet hair being pivotal to the look, how can you nail the trend for clients this party season?
Experts at haircare specialists, Neäl & Wølf, have revealed three of their favourite balletcore hairstyles seen on the runways, and have provided their top tips to achieving the sleek and chic ballet looks, incorporating bows and scrunchies to embody the trend.
Classic Ballerina Bun
Laura Elliott, Head Stylist and Educator at Neäl & Wølf says: “To create the classic ballerina bun, you’ll need to begin with clean and dry hair. If you find your client’s hair is too smooth or slippery, use a texture spray to create dimension and help the bun stay intact for longer.
“Split the hair into a middle part, using a nourishing hair oil and combing brush to slick hair back into a mid-level bun that sits comfortable below the crown. Twist the hair and secure with a bobble. Then, add a silk or velvet scrunchie to get your client channelling their inner ballerina.”
Half Up Half Down
“A very simple balletcore look that is perfect for party season is the half up half down, elevated by an oversized velvet bow. Whether your client prefers curls or straight locks, section the hair into two by partitioning on both sides from above the ears. Then, neatly bring these pieces back and secure in place with a small bobble,” says Laura.
“Taking a velvet bow clip, place over the hair which is tied back in the bobble, while also leveraging hair up to create some volume. Once secured, use hair oil to smooth any baby hairs and flyaways. If your client opts for curly locks, for added texture and dimension, take your curling wand or straighteners, and begin loosely curling. For this look, relaxed bouncy waves look best. Use a flexible styling hairspray to secure the look.”
Pretty Plaits
“Plaits are a staple for ballerinas and perfect for party season, especially for those with face framing pieces. Starting with textured hair, section the hair into two, and do a basic three-piece plait on both sides, securing with discreet mini bobbles. Hair with breakage can often be visible with plaits so ensure you enrich each plait with oil and smooth the hair down,” advises Laura.
“Once you’re happy with how the plaits sit, focus on face framing by waving bangs away from the face. You can then finish the look off by tying two silk bows around the plaits which adds a festive touch and elevates the balletcore look.”
