The default setting of stylists fighting shy of Afro-Caribbean hair services in mainstream salons is slowly being transformed. Increasing numbers of owners are recognising that in modern Britain catering exclusively to the Caucasian crowd can be limiting, and that increased ethnic inclusivity means money in the bank.

Not least because the African/Caribbean consumer typically spends up to eight times more than her white Caucasian counterpart on hair and beauty products and services.

Here, HJ's 2011 Afro Hairdresser of the Year, Junior Green, provides expert recommendations for achieving the perfect blend of European and ethnically-diverse hair services in your salon.

  • Ensure your skill set is well rounded. Hairdressers at any level should be competent in drying and styling this kind of texture so it looks fantastic. Achieve this and clients will be impressed and be inspired to book future appointments.

  • If you can demonstrate your Afro hairdressing talents through advertising, for example by featuring model shots in the window, then great. Clients want to see what you can do, and to believe in your ability from the beginning.

  • Any accolades you've won should be highlighted as they endorse the fact that you're a forward-thinking, boundary-pushing salon.

  • Training should be top of the agenda. There are many courses available, which enable niche learning, allowing staff to focus on a particular aspect, relaxers for example.

  • Ensure your team understands all the types of Afro hair that exist and doesn't just adopt a 'one-size fits all' attitude. All hairdressing is about individuality.
