mullets to the
mixie, just when we thought we’d seen short hair in all its glory, we present to you…'The Frenchie’.
We’ve been seeing bobs make their return everywhere and it looks like they’re here to stay for 2022, with celebs like Jennifer Lopez and Laura Harrier leading the pack. But if the blunt shoulder-length bob isn’t for your clients, then maybe ‘The Frenchie’ is…

Radical and sexy meets effortless and chic, think strong bob shapes with soft texture, classic colours and undemanding ‘wow’ factor. With all the power of the blunt bob shape, and the depth and airiness of styles such as the shag, ‘The Frenchie’ places somewhere in between.
Traditionally, French bobs are cut along the mouth line, teamed with a short, blunt fringe. But this industry is no stranger to taking a modern twist on an older look, so we’re seeing a less rigid variation of this cut, with choppier and wispier fringes and a range of lengths.
INNOluxe superstar and owner of Society salon, Georgia Bell says: “It’s been interesting to see the styles our clients are leaning towards in 2022, many of them want movement, texture and softness”. Team this with rich gloss and high shine, and you’ve got yourself ‘The Frenchie’.

This cut can be adapted to each client, taking into consideration their face shape and hair type. Tom Berry, advanced director at The Blushes Collective says: “You can have split fringes to lengthen the face for square and round, or widen the fringe and make it fuller to shorten longer face shapes.”
Karen Thomson, owner of KAM Hair and Body Spa adds: "This is a particularly great choice for clients with thinner hair types that want to give their hair a thicker appearance. However, 'The Frenchie' even works fabulously for those with thicker hair types, giving the hair a less ‘boxy’ finish and adding shape and also allowing the hair to be a lot more manageable when it comes to styling."
Darrel Starkey, owner of Taylor’s Hair Studio adds: “To give it a more bespoke feel, I would work to a small graduation, just to give the look a different dimension and to give it a tailored perception. Working towards a soft textured look, I would determine the client’s specified length and cut it into a one-length bob, adding a few layers to add to the texture.”
What makes the haircut so attractive to clients?

This cut is beautifully low-maintenance, only requiring a 6-8 week cut. Plus, the texture and depth of the cut make for quick, easy styling – win, win. When it comes to ‘The Frenchie’, the messier the better. “It’s easy to look after for clients as the look is distressed perfection. For finer haired clients, they should blow-dry with their heads upside down to give a little width and volume. And as for curly hair, try diffusing just the top. This will not only stop those pesky flyaway surface hairs, but it will allow the top to be a little flatter while the side can swell to show off the width of the cut,” Tom adds.
The look should be fun and bouncy and shouldn’t look too ‘done’. Time-poor clients will even love to hear that this cut looks fantastic air-dried and on the go for a casual daytime look. But equally, sultry and chic when styled for the evening. Darrel adds: “With the addition of layers throughout, leaving this to dry naturally will give it a real relaxed and boho feel, the natural look is very on-trend.”
Will bobs always be in?

"I think the Frenchie bob will always be on trend. We have seen it remain popular throughout the last few years with different variations and takes on the classic style. At the moment, we are seeing this style paired with short fringes and lots of feathered texture throughout the ends," adds Brian Leo McCallum, owner of ROAR Hair and Beauty.
“There are so many opportunities to style and wear this look that I feel it will be here for a good while yet and adapted as we move through the seasons,” Darrel confirms.
The possibilities of short hair are clearly endless, and we’re excited to see ‘The Frenchie’ swarm into your salons. And it certainly will! So, help your clients stay one step ahead of the trends and tell them all about it at their next appointment.
