Safy burton on her greatest colour inspirations
Safy Burton runs her own salon, represents Goldwell, works with the Fellowship and has been featured countless times on our Instagram feed; it's fair to say she knows the industry. That's exactly why we just had to ask about her colour inspirations for our latest issue.

What do you love most about being a colourist?

It’s difficult to pinpoint one thing I love about being a colourist. I enjoy anything that gets my mind working and dramatic colour changes do just that. There is no better satisfaction than bringing someone’s colour vision to life, then looking at the before and after pictures – the side by side transformation is so striking. Engaging with clients, building up loyal relationships and seeing the smile on their face is so enjoyable and I simply love it. https://www.instagram.com/p/CZbjvtWKI7U/

Where do you go for colour inspiration?

Art, architecture, nature, my fellow colourists – there is inspiration everywhere. Fashion is very similar to the hairdressing industry where the trends continually change and I certainly take inspiration from the likes of fashion week, brand campaigns and new collections. I also love to travel, taking pictures and storing them for future use. It may be a couple of months or years later, but something from a while ago can inspire me at any time.

What are your favourite colouring techniques at the moment?

I'm loving holographic techniques, at the moment. It’s actually super simple to work with and creates the most detailed, eye-catching looks. Once you know how to work with it, you can experiment with many different shades and tones.

What are the challenges facing colourists right now?

Social media is a great source for many, me included, and it allows individuals to be inspired without any judgement. However, more often than not, social media can give clients unrealistic expectations. I have had many clients show me images of a hair colour they would like which is not achievable in one sitting. As professionals, it’s our job to continue to eduacate our clients and this is something I do through my own social media. In most cases, I work with the client to put together a bespoke hair plan, which should allow them to achieve their hair goal in a couple of appointments. https://www.instagram.com/p/CTxaWOVKv4c/

What advice would you give to a trainee colourist?

Don’t be afraid to experiment. The colour industry is all about being creative and trying out new things – you may end up uncovering a new trend or technique. Whether it’s via a seminar, Instagram Live, theory work or in your spare time, allow your ideas to run free and continue to build on your skills. Within the hairdressing industry, education never stops and is the foundation of our craft, so never stop learning. It’s how we and the wider industry evolve.

Are there any colouring trends you’d like to bring back?

I would say 90s chunky highlights – these were a firm favourite of mine and I’d love to see them back. They’re great for both blondes and brunettes, and they could also work with pops of vivid colours.

What’s been your most memorable colour consultation/appointment?

I don’t think I could choose just one. I encounter so many different clients, colour processes and colour corrections that most have a memorable factor. Whether it’s a difficult correction, a natural colour to vivid or just a super long transformation, there is always something to remember. https://www.instagram.com/p/CK6J_hwjqgx/ Don't miss our chat with Brian Leo McCallum on his colour inspiration!
