Why did you enter HJ's British Hairdressing Awards?

You have to compete with the best to be the best. Quite simply I always strive to challenge myself, and you can never be complacent. By entering these awards you push yourself to be better.

When did you start thinking about your collection?

The thought process doesn't have a fixed beginning, it is something that can strike at any moment. I collate a mix of ideas, and go from there. Inspiration can be taken from something I may have seen in 2009 for example. If it's relevant, then use it!

What was your budget for the shoot?

I managed to keep costs down by sourcing girls from the salon to use as models, and you can't tell. They are incredible.

How did you find a photographer, stylist and makeup artist?

I have a team I use, and have worked with before, so you know you'll be on the same creative wavelength. This is important when you are shooting a collection; use people you feel comfortable with, who 'get' your vision.

How did you find models - what do you look for in a hair model, did you use professionals, how much did they cost?

As I mentioned, for my 2011 collection I used clients. The girls are amazing, and you would never know they're not professional! I also scout the agencies, you can never see too much. So get as many packages as you can. The wrong model can ruin a collection.

How long did it take from the day of the shoot to sending off a collection you were happy with?

Not long at all, I knew as soon as the images were captured that we had created something great. For me, because of digi-capture, you know when you have the perfect shot, regardless of re-touch.

How did entering the British Hairdressing Awards effect life in the salon - did your team get involved and did it mean you had to be away from the salon a lot ?

The team loves it so it's a great source of motivation. It is even better if  I have them on set with me better because they get to witness the bigger picture. It also gives them something exciting to tell the clients.

What three tips would you give to people considering entering the British Hairdressing Awards?

  • Source great models
  • Have a concept in mind
  • Don't be afraid to test boundaries.

How, if at all, will you be marketing your award?

We have the artwork in all salons with the title of Southern Hairdresser of the Year accompanying it.
