Save our salons campaign reveals next steps post-budget 2021 The Save Our Salons Campaign founders reveal the next steps following the Spring Budget 2021, which revealed hair and barber salons will not be given the same VAT cut as the hospitality industry. The Save Our Salons Campaign founders, which include Hellen Ward at Richard Ward Hair & Spa, Toby Dicker at The Chapel, Luke Hersheson at Hersheson’s, Stephen Nurse at Daniel Galvin and Kim Clayton at Errol Douglas London said:
We may not have achieved our original mission – the emergency reduction of VAT for our sector in this budget, but we are as sure as hell not going to give up! We feel totally overlooked in this budget and are insulted to be excluded from the support and special arrangements for VAT that the hospitality sector has been given. We stand in support of hospitality, but we are outraged that personal care has been ignored once again.

What are the next steps for the Save Our Salons Campaign following the Spring Budget 2021 News

The Save Our Salons Campaign founders will build on the work carried out so far following the Budget 2021 and will continue to lobby the UK Government for parity with the hospitality sector and a VAT system in future that works for the hairdressing and barbering industry.
The founders said: "We simply could not have done this without every single one of you so thank you for all of your support thus far. Please do continue to share any feedback from meetings and communication with MPs. It is also vital that we continue to share our message on social media." At this point, the campaign needs real, tangible, up-to-date data to feed directly to the civil servants advising the UK Government about the state of the industry and the devastating impact that COVID-19 has had on hair and barber businesses. The founders added:
We know that many of you have already completed our surveys but we need your assistance again. Please can we ask for 10 minutes of your time to feedback new, specific and up to date.information that may change the course of our industry forever.

What has the Save Our Salons Campaign achieved so far?

The Save Our Salons campaign was originally set up as the next stage in the #ChopTheVAT campaign with the aim of getting the hair and barber industry the same VAT cut as the hospitality industry to help businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic. The campaign encouraged salon owners to contact their local MPs to galvanise support for the campaign. The Save Our Salons Campaign did not succeed with its original aim of getting a VAT cut in the Spring Budget 2021 but it has achieved a number of other objectives and will continue to fight for the hair and barber industry:
  • The campaign has created a respected and trusted independent non-political organisation run by real VAT-paying salon owners to represent real VAT-paying hair and barber salons.
  • The campaign has created a large and significant following of like minded salons
  • The campaign has received industry governing body awareness and appreciation.
  • The campaign has received massive trade and consumer press.
  • The campaign already has a significant social media following
  • The campaign already has trust of and direct lines of communication with civil servants that directly influence government decision making
  • The campaign has an understanding of what influences UK Government to make decisions
  • The UK campaign is changing how the UK Government perceive the hairdressing and barbering industry.
