Sally Montague Sadler Gate is the latest addition to the Sally Montague Hair Group, with a Grade II listed building playing host to the new flagship salon.
The latest addition to the five-salon group comes in a special year for Sally – she is celebrating 30 years in business. Her first eponymous salon opened for business in 1983, with five more following before the flagship site in the Sadler Gate area of the city became available.
For me it has always been about choosing the right locations. Derbyshire is varied and has changed greatly over the years but I have always looked to open in premium market towns on the north side of Derby,” she explains. “One size doesn’t fit all and each salon is bespoke. It is a strategy that seems to have worked.
Sally Montague Sadler Gate is housed in a Grade II listed building, but luckily Sally and her team knew what to expect as they have dealt with councils and gaining planning permissions before. However, they weren’t expecting it to be a complete refurbishment and for it to cost quite so much. “Our design ideas came from the building itself to create the wow factor and I think we have created just that,” Sally enthuses.

Tell us about the building.
It is Grade II listed and was in a very poor state when we purchased it. It had formally been an ironmongers, and had been vacant for the past two years. Our aim was to find a building with character that could be re-configured to suit our needs.
What's the colour scheme?
I chose a stone, grey and ‘plaster pink’ colour scheme in addition to brick and wood tones – we wanted to complement the natural warmth of the building. The wall coverings were original handmade brickwork that was completely exposed, with parts covered in original lime wash. We decided to seal the walls and leave them as we found them as this finish leant itself to the main salon area having a very original feel, while complementing the reclaimed and antique furnishings.
Tell us about the special features in the salon.
The doors both upstairs and downstairs are a real talking point: there are three brass lantern lights, which came from a local 1940s ballroom and create a focal point at the reception desk.
Did any major work have to be undertaken?
Before work started our first task was to gain listed building consent. We managed to gain all the permissions needed, but we then had to design the salon around the listed building framework. The cellar had been blocked up for 60 years and required serious excavation and tanking, but now forms one of the dispensary areas and staffroom.
