If your clients feel inspired by Halloween to make a bold hair change, Safy B, Owner of Safy B's Salon, talks us through her favourite looks and how to recreate these in the salon

Looking for Halloween looks to inspire clients with in the salon? Look no further and take inspiration from Safy B's calico cat, witch, vampire and siren hair looks this spooky season.

The Callico Cat Hair Colour Technique

Calico hair is a multi-coloured hair dye technique designed to mimic the natural patchwork of colours found in calico cats. They’re known for their gorgeous mix of white, orange, black: the official colours of Halloween!

When it comes to creating calico hair, it’s all about keeping it soft, patchy in the prettiest way, and customised to each person. When sectioning the hair to achieve that perfect calico pattern, I would take into account if my client wanted a really soft, seamless blend of colour. Or, if they were feeling courage and wanted something bolder, more like the 90s blocky highlight style that’s making a comeback with this look.

After processing, I’d use a toner or gloss to melt everything together, making sure the finish is seamless and still shows off all the lovely dimensions. It’s such a playful look, perfect for anyone wanting something creative but still really wearable.

Modern, Witch-Inspired Hair Colour

If I had to imagine what a witch’s hair would look like - this would be it! The colour placement was designed so the tones reveal themselves through movement and light, creating the illusion that colour has been poured through the hair.

To create this look, I first coloured the hair using black dye, leaving selected areas of negative space. Once processed, the hair was rinsed and dried to create a more natural transition between the dark base and the final colours. I then selected areas to gently lift the black. Rather than removing it completely, I softened the tone, creating a faded base that allowed the permanent shades to blend seamlessly into the hair.

After rinsing and drying again, I applied a oxidant-free direct hair dye in orange, turquoise, yellow and pink. As the shades blended, they naturally created secondary tones of green and purple, enhancing the iridescent effect and giving the colour depth and movement.

Dark-Based, Vampire-Inspired Hair

I love everything about this image, it’s dark, mysterious and vampy. The model’s natural base was a level 3 and when creating this look, I first coloured the hair using black dye to darken the base. Once processed, the hair was rinsed and dried to create a more natural transition between the dark base and the final colours. I flicked a colour removal product onto selected areas to gently lift the black and create the patchy finish. After rinsing and drying again, I applied dye in orange and yellow to create an uneven, edgy finish.

Multicoloured Siren Hair Technique

Would you believe me if I told you that this look was a complete fluke? We had used the hair extensions for a previous look, and they were wet on the table. They were previously dyed in pink, purple, green and yellow and they were then wet to create this gorgeous blend of colours. Placed strategically over the face, the hair mimicked everything I’d imagine a siren’s hair would look like - fresh out the water! Finished off with a scrunching technique to add some texture, this is a great way to add some colour to your spooky look.
