Romance was in the air at the 2013 Oscars, with textured imperfect updos emerging as one of the biggest red carpet hair trends of the night.

Combining the best of Bardot, bedhead texture with curls and volume for undisputed glamour, these updos are the perfect accompaniment to the pale and interesting gowns that dominated the red carpet.

Naomi Watts, Amanda Seyfried and the night's big winner, Jennifer Lawrence, all opted for textured looks full of flyaways for a soft, unabashedly romantic feel.

Top TV hairdresser, Jamie Stevens, says: "A dominant trend on the Oscar's red carpet was the swept back, effortlessly chic and timeless loose updo as shown on Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence, as well as Naomi Watts, Amanda Seyfriend, Samantha Barks, Amy Adams and Alicia Vikander".

"For me Naomi Watts looked incredible and worked this trend to the maximum. Soft, romantic updos like these, looser is better, which makes them easy to achieve!

"Simply blow-dry using a texturising cream for volume at the crown and gather the hair back into a low slung bun with grips. Gently tease and fluff the sides to loosen the hair for a soft finish and spritz a firm but touchable hairspray to keep the look in place."

Royal hairdresser, Richard Ward, agrees, commenting: "The low chignon is an understated trend which always works beautifully at red carpet events. Amy Adams sported a beautiful hair up which looked both sophisticated and simple but not too perfect. The use of the centre parting and tendrils helps to keep this look fresh and current.

"Updos like these work best on day old hair, as the natural oils in hair give the style extra grip and hold. If you're looking to recreate a look similar to Jennifer's or Amy's, then prepare your hair the night before by washing it with just a shampoo and treatment masque. No conditioner."
