Julian Holland won North Eastern Hairdresser of the Year 2011 with his youthful, edgy collection.

We asked Julian to share the behind the scenes story of his winning entry.

Julian-NE.jpgWhy did you decide to enter the British Hairdressing Awards?

Having been involved in the British Hairdressing Awards Artistic Team of the Year with the salon, it was always my dream to achieve a British Hairdressing Award as an individual artist.

When did you start thinking about your collection?

After watching the 2010 Hairdressing Awards, the very next day I set to work on thinking about my collection. I know from Mark's experience that preparation is really important.  You never can start too early; preparation is everything.

What was your budget for the shoot?

Without giving too much away, I'm pleased to say I managed to keep pretty much within my budget.  It's really important to set a budget before you start a shoot - costs can spiral out of control if you don't keep your eye on things.

How did you find a photographer, stylist and makeup artist?

My photographer just happened to be Mark Hill!  Mark has been intensively involved in photography for the last four years and has produced all of the imagery for the Mark Hill brand.  It was very important that my imagery not only reflected my individual style but they also reflected the brand as they would be used on packaging and promotional material for the brand worldwide. The stylist was recommended by an editor whose opinion I value.  The make-up artist came highly recommended in the same way.  When choosing the team, it is important that you feel comfortable and inspired by their skills and approach.

Tell us a little about your models. What do you look for in a hair model? How did you source them and how much did they cost?

Model costs varied from agency to agency, model to model.  My first priority was always the right face followed by, of course, gorgeous quality hair.  I used professional models across all of the collection.

How long did it take from the day of the shoot to sending off a collection you were happy with?

The shoot only took place about three weeks before entry date!

How did entering the British Hairdressing Awards effect life in the salon - did your team get involved and did it mean you had to be away from the salon a lot?

The salon has been involved in awards for so many years, so they understand the time it takes to plan and shoot great images.   It was wonderful to have the salon and the team's support all the way.

What three tips would you give to people considering entering the British Hairdressing Awards?

Preparation, preparation, preparation!

How, if at all, will you be marketing your win in the salon?

Since winning, I have appeared on three television news programmes and been involved with various press events.  The local press have also been extremely supportive.  Winning the title has opened new doors as well, workinga at London Fashion week and various other marketing opportunities.
