Nicola Coughlan has ditched her blonde locks for the season ahead, sporting a super trendy and wearable strawberry blonde. The
copper hair trend has won us all over this past year, but some clients are still hesitant to take the plunge: enter copper's not-too-distant cousin, strawberry blonde. And we spoke to Nicola's colourist, Jason Hogan, to get the full scope...
Nicola Coughlan's Strawberry blonde
"We knew Nicola was up for a glamour award and wanted to switch up her look," says Jason Hogan, a colourist at Josh Wood Atelier. "She always had so much fun experimenting with different clothes and her stylist does a wonderful job, but we never really strayed too far colour-wise, so now was the time."
“Nicola’s new strawberry blonde suits her perfectly. It adds a warmth to her complexion and makes her blue eyes pop!” says Andrew Smith, owner of Andrew Smith Salons. “Strawberry blonde, alongside copper hues, is so fitting for the season ahead. For lighter blondes, this tone is a great colour to experiment with through autumn/winter whilst toning the hair down and giving it a break from any bleach and lighteners.”
How the experts would do it
"I highlighted throughout her hair using a textured and fine weave for dimension, working them closely together around the hairline for a pop. I loved using Wella Blonde Blondor Meches with 13 vol and Wella Illumina 10/ Lightest Blonde with 30 vol, and to tone I used Wella Illumina gloss 9/43 and 9/59 2:1," reveals Jason.
“For clients that are blonde already, this colour is super easy to achieve with a simple full head tint or toner, or by adding some strawberry blonde highlights throughout the hair,” adds Andrew. “I particularly love using milk_shake creative 7.34 and 8 to create this golden/peachy tone. Or, for clients looking for something a little brighter and more peach toned, a semi-permanent colour in peach is a great choice and gives the hair a high sheen.”
“Clients with a brunette base will need to lighten the hair up to achieve this strawberry hue. This should be done in two to three sessions to avoid excess damage and ensure a light, clean blonde base is achieved before tint is applied.”
"For those who aren't ready for a drastic change, adding soft highlights around the face or balayage through the lengths of the hair and layering an amber or warm butterscotch gloss can be a wonderful way for them to embrace the trend," Jason offers.
For clients who want to try this colour but don’t want anything permanent, colour-depositing hair masks are great to recommend, such as the milk_shake whipped cream leave-in conditioners (mixing copper, light pink and golden blonde), the Wella Color Fresh Mask or the Moroccanoil Color Depositing Mask. These can also be used to refresh hair colour between salon visits whilst keeping the hair hydrated.
Autumnal colours on the map
"It's wonderful that people are no longer afraid of embracing warmth with their colour, a lot of redheads are now permeating social media and clients are bringing them as references, from Monica Belucci's spicy brunette to Emma Stone's soft copper-gold," Jason tells us. "Clients that struggle with keeping their hair ash-toned are even loving these warm tones, not having that fade and the tone staying more consistent."
