Mullets on men have been seen across the stages at this year’s Salon International. On the HJ Men stage on Saturday three acts showcased 1980s inspired mullets with a modern twist.
Anna Carter from
The Lion and The Fox in Clerkenwell, London cut a shaggy modern mullet using cutting techniques that emphasised her model’s cheekbones. She referenced the distressed bob of Kurt Cobain and the dandy style of Harry Styles. The mullet was set off beautifully by the colour work of Jason Welch who used a high lift tint and balayage that worked with the model’s natural level 8 golden blonde tone.

Scott Johnston aka Rogue Barber also did a variation on the 1980s New Romantic mullet. The Skull and Bone ambassador focused on bringing women’s hairdressing techniques into barbering, having trained first as a hairdresser. He worked with his model’s thick hair to bring it into a modern mullet style with a combination of scissor over comb and a minimal amount of clipper work.

Pete Burkill for Alter Ego used his mullet to make a statement on the industry. “It’s our insecurities that stop us pushing it with men’s hair. Men come in and say they want something different and we think men’s hair is men’s hair But there’s nothing to stop us being playful and having some fun with it.”

What will we see today in the way of mullets? Will the HJ Stage be mixing things up with mullets on women’s hair?
