Longer lengths

"With men's hair trends for Spring/Summer 2012 heading towards longer length on top, men will wear their hair with a more lived-in, nonchalant masculine edge. The Fashion Week catwalks of designers including Jil Sander and Dolce & Gabbana displayed trends that showed heavily layered longer tops and long forward-facing fronts which will become popular in 2012.

"The ever-present quiff of the last few years will make a subtle, looser appearance in 2012 (think more early Morrissey and DKNY than Johnny Cash). Hair will be freer, looser and less sculpted and will use a multi-layering, low impact almost no-hold approach to product application to achieve these looks."

Dishevelled but elegant

"Men's hair this season is being worn loose and in disarray with a dishevelled but elegant edge. With longer sides using products such as volume mousse, sea salt spray and matte paste enables the hair to be moved and manipulated to create a natural looking texture. Harry Styles is a good example of a celebrity working this look."

"London Fashion Week Menswear day proved the point that quiffs, parts and texture aren't going anywhere soon. Many of the models sported high and tight blends as well as loose disconnections. Sleek was the hair look accompanying the suits; texture for the quirky labels.

"David Beckham sported a fantastic quiff with a parting last year and I think this had some inspiration on London Fashion Week, both on and off the catwalk. High and tight partings, as sported by Ryan Gosling, are also a favourite in the salon, but not dismissing people embracing their natural wave like Alex Pettyfer."

"I was pleased to see something a bit different when it came to men's hair at London Fashion Week. We have seen a move away from the classic gentleman haircuts that always hit the runway. For London Fashion Week, I created hair looks for two collections.

"For Ozwald Boateng's collection, long hair was a big feature. All the models had shoulder-length hair or longer. The look was dishevelled with movement giving that beach-surfer appeal. We will definitely see much longer silhouettes when it comes to men's hair through to 2013.

"The Cottweiler show had a completely different angle. It was a mix of sci-fi elements with an influence of 1990's rave. Hair was aggressive on the sides with a strong, blunt fringe. Celebrities sporting a similar look include Olly Murs and Gary Barlow."
Chris Foster, Foss Academy, London

"This Spring/Summer, men's hair is looking cooler and more fashionable than ever and we will see a continuation of the 1980's trend. This will evolve from looks we have seen in previous seasons on the catwalk. Men with a natural wave can slick hair on the sides and wear gel through the top to achieve the wet look."

"The men's look this season is all about the right products to create defined curls, slicked back sides and texture. The rockabilly haircut will be popular as well as men's quiffs that will be shorter on the sides."

"This Spring/Summer men's hair will be heavily influenced by the 1920's era. The super slicked-back wet look with a deep side parting will be one of the biggest trends for the new season. Celebrities including Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and David Beckham have all mastered this look to perfection with their heavily gelled styles with a retro feel and wet-look shine."
Paul Farr, Destin Hair & Beauty, 2011 winner of the Male Expert at the Redken NYC Awards

"The key looks for men this Spring/Summer will involve texture and volume. Both long and short, hair will be texturised, giving that groomed but undone look that was huge on the catwalks. This look is seen on celebrities like Douglas Booth and Robert Pattinson.

"The matte hair trend will continue to be huge and men should in vest in dust, clays and pastes to achieve the look. For short hair, it's all about graphic cuts. You will see more length through the top combined with an undercut. For longer hair, the slicked back look will be popular. Look to David Beckham for inspiration."
