London fashion week autumn/winter 09 - the trends

Here at HJi we're just about recovered from the fabulous hussle and bustle that is London Fashion Week...darling.

When it came to hair, naturally it proved the ultimate accessory for any outfit and we've managed to narrow it down to four key trends that are worth taking note of: clean & sleek; contemporary hair-up; curls & volume and texture.

Whether it was the iridescent shine of Agyness Deyn's structured bob for the Henry Holland show, or the ultra sleek wet-look creations for Betty Jackson, smooth finishes were a key theme at London Fashion Week. The clean finishes proved the perfect partners for the shiny fabrics, patterns and prints which dominated the catwalk.

Be it young fresh looks with plenty of length, or slicked back sophistication, the clean finish was executed to perfection.

Gels, shine mists and strong hold hairsprays were the must-have products to create these luminous looks.

Contemporary hair-up

Autumn/Winter 09/10 collections saw a new take on the traditional updo, with bespoke buns, sexy chignons and texturised ponytails reinventing this catwalk classic. Buns were worn high, to the side, and added contemporary elegance and glamour to designers' creations. Strong shapes and sculpted styles formed some of the most eye-catching hair looks of fashion week.

For the hair up creations, it was all about the contrast between the perfectly polished finish, and the more matte looking texturised locks. Think decadently dishevelled and perfect silhouettes which were all created with the help of shine sprays, polishes or texture sprays.

Charles-Anastase-curls.jpgCurls and volume

A red hot favourite every season, curls are definitely here to stay. It was all about big curls with attitude, and volume that spoke for itself. Designer paul Costello took influences from late 60s and the 70s with LA glamour meets Upper East Side new York. Think stylish evening hair the morning after.

Traditional techniques with a modern twist were at the root of these styles, to give curls a thoroughly fresh and frivolous finish. Curls were given a multi-dimensional finish, using volume mousse, shine sprays and of course, heated rollers.

Texture FAD-texture.jpg

The boho look has evolved and for 2009/10 texture is all about statements plaits and crimping, combined with backcombing and plenty of length. Textures were cool and clashing, fusing strength and femininity.

Influences included early 80s rock chic's, classic Camden Town and in the case of Co-oporative designs, the films of Tim Burton.Over at the FAD show, the crimpers were out in full force, for looks that were volumous textured takes on the traditional bob.

Just like the girls, the guy's hair at London Fashion Week took influences from previous decades including the 30s and 70s, with quiffs, texture and sleek and sheen looks in abundance.

As usual an eclectic cocktail of styles waltzed down the runways, and neat precision cuts with a military edge proved that traditional techniques are here to stay.

Matte pastes and light texturising creams were the must-have products to get the look, as was anything that added bling bling shine to finish off the military look.
