Rosie Binns at Ethos Hairdressing won
North Western Hairdresser of the Year at HJ's British Hairdressing Awards, alongside her colleague Brent Barlow. She is also a member of the
Matrix House of Talent team.
When did you decide you wanted to be a hairdresser?
I got a job in a salon when I was younger, but I assumed it would just be a stop gap. While working there, I met some really creative people who showed me that hairdressing could be really exciting, which was when I decided it was the perfect career for me.
Where did you train?
Leeds City college and then in salon at The Element in Leeds.
What was your first job like?
It was a great starting point for me. My two bosses really put the time in to help me home my skills. They used to let me open up the salons on Sundays to do photoshoots whenever I could!
When did you join Ethos?
I moved to Manchester two and a half years ago for the job.
Why did you decide to enter the British Hairdressing Awards and how did you find doing your first shoot?
Me and Brent decided we wanted to do a collection and thought if we followed the British Hairdressing Awards format we would have a brief to stick to and a plan to follow. We also thought it would be a learning curve, as it's something we have both hoped we would win one day. After the shoot, we thought we had nothing to lose by entering as we were really pleased and proud with what we had produced. We are very lucky working at Ethos as we gget to help Sharon and Adam with shoots and shows a lot, though I think the pressure's on when it's your own ideas and work!
How important is it for you to work for a salon that supports your competition work?
I can't imagine it would be easy to enter the British Hairdressing Awards without the support and encouragement of everyone at the salon. It's also great to get feedback and guidance from the team.
What’s been your career highlight so far?
Of course winning at the British Hairdressing Awards is up there. Everything that's happened since then has been great; getting to meet and talk with people I really respect in the industry has been a fantastic opportunity.
What’s your next career goal?
Keep learning, keep trying bigger ideas. There are plenty of great competitions that I'm still to enter that provide great opportunities and education.
What piece of advice would you give your student self?
Stop rushing, you'll qualify when you’re ready! You can't expect to know everything the first year. Really work hard on the basics – they’re your foundation for the rest of your career.
