Hj’s 2022 hair trend predictions

From the mullet to the waft fringe, 2021 has seen a whirlwind of hair trends. With Miley Cyrus showcasing her iconic mullet and clients all over the country jumping on the money-piece craze. As we look towards 2022, there is no doubt many more to come (or resurface). We spoke to some of the top hairdressers in the industry on their 2022 hair trends predictions...

Christopher Laird, November Collective

The Bob, slick-back do's and Curtain bangs are on Christopher Laird's 2022 radar: "2022 will see clients returning to wanting a ‘haircut’. They’re bored of the grown out longer locks that were embraced during lockdown, thanks to how low maintenance they were. Clients will be going for the chop and opting for a classic haircut, such as the bob, which is timeless, versatile and works for everyone – no matter the hair type, colour or texture." "For fashion-forward clients, the slick-backed wet gel ‘just stepped out of the shower’ look is back – this is a really versatile style as it works with all hair lengths, from short to long, and is really easy for clients to achieve at home. Curtain bangs will still be going strong well into 2022 - they have been a dream for me as a stylist, as they suit so many people and are a perfect introduction to adding shape to your hairstyle," explains Christopher.

"Au Natural is the theme for AW21/22 and colour is moving away from the shocking brights and bolds of the past. Freehand balayage and lighter strands painted around the face is still reigning strong to mimic hair lightened by sunshine, using the blended root effect for a more natural grow out. Less dramatic colour means less commitment. Customers can change their hair hue more often! Many clients are also opting for minimal fuss-free hair. With the aim of securing an ‘I haven’t even tried’ feel." "The texture is also centre stage with products that produce a dry finish. Invisible styling and invisible finishes are the key to keeping it simple and soft. The goal is for weightless waves and curls, so if the hair already has a kink, or movement, fully embracing this works really well for an uncontrived and relaxed feel -which is the aim of the game this winter!"

"Deep chocolate brown is a huge trend this winter and one we predict will be one of the biggest hair colour trends for 2022. Bronde is also an everlasting classic that is just to die - blending browns and blondes together is the best solution when a client struggles to choose a solid hair colour. Bangs are also a hot trend that you can jump on without worrying if it’s still in style or not with messy, 70’s-inspired curtain bangs. We are absolutely obsessed with them in the salons!!"
