Heatless Curls: What The Pros Really Think

Published 08th Nov 2022 by Chlo Weldon

TikTok has seen some clients turn to a host of bizarre heatless styling aids from tights to dressing gown belts. It seems clients are trying any household item in their hair. So, HJ asked the professionals for what they really think about heatless curls.

In case you haven’t seen the heatless curls hair hack, here’s make-up artist Chloe Bond demonstrating how to create curls using a dressing gown belt:

What the pros really think

"I believe heatless styling came into play as consumers embraced their natural texture during lockdown,” says Adam Reed, ghd ambassador. “Thanks to a more leisurely lifestyle and working from home, people let their hair dry naturally.” Lisa Farrall, Matrix UK&I ambassador agrees: “The pandemic meant clients had more time to play around at home with weird and wonderful trends, especially those we see on TikTok that look they take 20 seconds!"

As clients seem to be working towards finding new ways to protect and care for their hair, Neil Moodie for L’Oréal Professionnel says: “I believe HDTV and certain social media sites have created a new expectation for how ‘natural and healthy’ hair should look. I believe it’s crucial for a hairstylist to let their clients know what the reality of ‘natural and healthy’ hair actually looks like.” Likewise, Lisa agrees that knowledge is power. “At one time, no one would ask me what heat I’m using on my tools, or what heat protector I’m using. Now, clients want to know exactly what’s going on when I’m styling their hair.” What is more, for clients with blonde hair, Michelle Brace, blondes and balayage artist, believes heatless curls can be a great alternative for promoting a healthy haircare routine and protecting bleached hair from further damage.

But what about the overall result? Coral Jade, award-winning colourist, says: “Heatless curls are a great way for clients who have fragile hair to have curls without using any hot tools. Some of my clients get great results from this technique and sometimes, they last longer than when they curl it with hot tools themselves.” Lisa Carter, West Sussex hairdresser, also believes the heatless curls method is a great method for clients who struggle with at-home styling or have little time to spend on their hair. “It is a faff at first when you’re trying to wind both sides equally tight enough, but clients will be left with gorgeous waves without the hassle of using hot tools.”

What should I tell clients?

For clients who are looking for effortless curls which don’t take much time, heatless curls can be the perfect technique. However, a common misconception often believed by clients when using heatless techniques is that no product is needed. Anna Stubbs, digital creator, says: “Advise clients to prepare their hair with product before using this technique to give hold to the curls.” And although the heatless curls technique may protect hair from heat damage, clients will also need to be aware that breakage can be caused by continual use of this technique. “Recommend sleeping on a silk pillowcase or wrapping a silk scarf over the hair to further protect the hair from breakage,” says Lisa Carter.
