Habia have unveiled plans for the new Diploma in Hair and Beauty Studies, which it describes as the biggest new development in industry education. Designed to give 14-19 year-olds in England the chance to study a broad programme of learning, while allowing them to mix and match different forms of study with practical experience in the workplace, the diploma will provide young people with the essential skills that employers require in new recruits, according to Habia. Commenting on the launch, Habia CEO Alan Goldsbro said: “As well as broadening the options available to young people, the Diploma in Hair and Beauty Studies will bring a range of benefits to employers by preparing new recruits for the world of work and further training, giving them and the people who recruit them a head start on the road to success.”The Diploma in Hair and Beauty Studies will be available in three levels:
  • Foundation Diploma in Hair and Beauty Studies – aimed at learners who are 14 and who are not yet ready for a Higher or Level 2 programme but would like an introduction to hair and beauty studies
  • Higher Diploma in Hair and Beauty Studies – aimed at learners capable of a Level 2 programme but who are interested in an applied rather than academic approach. Learners will experience and develop a selected range of skills and knowledge relevant to the hair and beauty sector, enabling them to make an informed career choice
  • Advanced Diploma in Hair and Beauty Studies – providing learners with a range of management and business concepts, knowledge and skills within a hair and beauty context.
Because students learn through applied learning, it will enable students to acquire and apply knowledge, skills and understanding through tasks set within the context of the workplace. Key benefits to employers include:
  • Potential recruits better prepared and informed before entering your industry
  • Reduced post-16 salon training period needed before employees become commercially viable
  • A faster progression route to Level 3 Delivering some of the skills, and the majority of the knowledge and understanding, for an Apprenticeship
  • Improved retention and completion rates for qualifications and Apprenticeships
  • Better motivated and client friendly recruits who understand business needs in your industry
  • Recruits who understand the importance of Selling Skills to the bottom line
  • The opportunity to forge links and partnerships with local schools, colleges and training providers
  • Young people with between two and six years experience and knowledge of the industry
  • New recruits with employability skills such as teamwork, flexibility, self-management, positive attitude and customer care.
