Give the gift of colour with seasonal shade updates

Christmas is traditionally a time to treat yourself as well as others and nothing boosts confidence quite like a new hair colour.

Offering a selection of high-speed, low-commitment, seasonally themed services will attract plenty of takers, even among the die-hard colour averse. Just about everyone is obsessed with their party wardrobe and how to co-ordinate all the elements: dress, jewellery, accessories, make-up and so why not hair?

Profit and gloss

Shari Reynolds, premier colourist at Richard Ward Hair & Metrospa, London, has perfected her approach.

"Sequins are really popular this party season and I talk to clients about the impact the total look has on what they're wearing. Dull hair will seriously dilute the sparkle and so I recommend a glossing treatment. L'Oréal Professionnel's Symbio shades will literally last over the party season and then fade rather than grow out."

"You can tempt your clients with fashion colours or keep it natural for intense shine. It's the no-commitment nature of the service that should be emphasised this season as that is what's fashionable."

Comfort zones

Continuing the theme for colour that's cosmopolitan without being complex and costly, the vogue for 'cosmetics for hair' continues.

James Davis of Clay Salon & Spa, Oxshott, Surrey, comments: "One of the current trends is for temporary wash-off shades that inject an instant flash of colour for a night."

"Lilacs, silvers, corals, pinks and turquoise colours are all bang on trend, and most definitely work on a wash-out basis."

Semi-permanent colours in vibrant and rich shades such as red or violet on dark hair are a beautiful way to enhance natural hair colour with no commitment too.

Accents of colour have just the right amount of rebellion for those who don't want conventional highlights or lowlights and they won't blow the budget.

"Colour flashes around the hairline give a conventional hairdo a fresh dimension," says Mark Leeson of Mark Leeson Hair, Body & Mind, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire.

"They can be subtle or bright and as the hair moves a glimpse of colour flash is revealed. Similarly, toning services are a brilliant budget option for adding bling to dull blonde tones."

Shades to stun this season

  • The dip-dye look remains popular because of a legion of celeb fans. However, instead of brown to light caramel, we'll see more matte brown to lighter mink on the tips to create seasonal warmth and vibrancy.
  • For warm skin tones, painting shades of golden copper blonde and butterscotch on the ends creates a more multi-dimensional shade, similar to the two-tone colour technique from the Charles Worthington 2011 Angle Collection.
  • For cooler skin tones, the same technique can be applied using raspberry and cherry as red really does make the perfect Christmas colour.
