Organised by The Fellowship for British Hairdressing, the L'Oreal Academy in Hammersmith played host to an evening with Charles Worthington and some of the key members of his team.

Together they presented Charles' 25th anniversary collection - an array of beautiful cuts which, according to Art Team Director Marc Trinder, were mainly inspired by a post-modernism exhibition at the V&A.

Colour Director Carolyn Newman as on hand to give her views on colour for the coming season, which she said would be focused on freehand application for a more bespoke finish. "Dip dye is not dead, it's evolving," she explained, saying that she takes inspiration from the way artists blend and apply colour for her work.

Marc and his art team demonstrated cutting techniques live on stage, creating a range of dramatic styles featuring blunt fringes and steeply angled layers. Marc explained that extensions have becoming increasingly popular in the salon, not just for length and volume but with girls who want an unusual, temporary look (this was illustrated on stage with long blonde tendrils added to an edgy short cut).

There was a pause from the live styling as Charles was interviewed about his long and successful career, which started when he decided to give up training as an architect in order to join the world of hair. He named his biggest influences as Vidal Sassoon, Anthony Mascolo and Robert Lobetta, and spoke of the importance of training even in these difficult economic times.

A fun end to the show was provided as Charles and Marc went head to head clippering crazy platinum wigs into exaggerated shapes, before all the models returned to the stage for a final showcase of the Worthington team's work.
