Fashion week insiders: neil moodie

MOODIE Neil.jpgNeil Moodie is an acclaimed session stylist and editorial stylist for Bumble and bumble. 


A favourite at fashion weeks across the globe, Neil's work has also graced the pages of just about every glossy magazine on the planet, from The Face to Vogue Italia and he has worked alongside illustrious industry names including Mario Testino and Juergen Teller.


Here, Neil shares his advice for getting involved with session styling and secrets for creating perfect editorial hair.





























What are the five key items/products in your kit you couldn't survive without?

What trends are you predicting for A/W 2012? 
I don't know yet... I have lots of ideas in my head, but it will depend what's relevant to the designers I work with.


What was your favourite show last season?
Peter Jensen. His designs are so unique - he never follows the crowd and thinks outside of the box. I love how each season he bases his collection on an iconic woman who he admires - it's such an interesting and different way to work


What's your favourite trend for S/S 2012?
Dual-textured hair - wet looking vs dry. A lot of women don't experiment enough with their hair and it's all become so safe. Combining two extremes in this way has created some really interesting new looks for people to wear.


Three top tips for getting involved with session work?


  • Finish your training first.
  • Try to become somebody's first assistant and stick with them for at least two years - it's the best way to learn. Assistants are in such a rush these days but you really need to have done the ground work to carry you through. In session work you need to know all the techniques for styling hair and that's something you can't perfect in a couple of weeks. 
  • Learn your references and do research. You need to know hair from different eras, and important decades so you have things to refer to. It's not about copying them but more having them to be inspired by
Top London Fashion Week post-show hangout? 
I always go to Soho House on Greek Street - on the very top floor. They have big sofas to lounge around on - it's almost like being at home, plus I'm a member which helps!
