Diy hairdressing doomed to failure

Matthew Batham, News Editor, looks at why DIY hairdressing will never catch on.

It's official, people would rather spend money on getting their hair cut than on food!

Well, that's actually a slight distortion of the facts, but it is true (according to research by internet bank, Egg) that 36% of respondents were cutting back on the amount they spend on food and drink, compared to 19% who were stretching their finances by cutting their own hair.

But secretary general, Eileen Lawson believed the survey results had a positive message. "The vast majority of people realise that when it comes to hairdressing, it's wise to leave it to the experts."

Recession or no recession, there should still be a wealth of expert talent available to ensure DIY enthusiasts stick to flatpacks and not fringes.

The industry is still investing in stylists and colourists of the future with an array of initiatives, including Project X - the Fellowship for British Hairdressing's annual scheme to help young talent flourish.

This year's team was recently treated to an intimate audience with Fellowship Hairdresser of the Year, Mark Hayes.

Members were escorted by Project X leaders Robert Eaton and Aaron Blondell to the Sassoon Academy in London, where Sassoon international creative director, Mark, talked about his career and the techniques that have made the Sassoon name renowned globally. contemporary.jpg

Mark also gave a cutting demo along with other members of the Sassoon academy artistic team.

North East based salon group, Contemporary gave its young stylists a chance to practise and demonstrate their skills, with a photoshoot on location led by art director, Claire Morely. The results can be seen here!

"I wanted to give our emerging young talent the opportunity to experience working on a live shoot, push the boundaries and produce their own collection," said Claire.

Why would anyone want to cut their own hair!
