Coronavirus Update: England national lockdown means all hair salons and hairdressing businesses must close from Tuesday 5 January
Boris explained during his broadcast that given the new more contagious variant of Coronavirus and the alarming figures, it had become clear we need to do more to bring the virus under control and help the vaccination roll-out in the UK.
He said the UK Government will once more be telling people in England to stay at home like in the first March lockdown, with the only exceptions being to carry out essential shopping, exercise, to seek medical help or to escape domestic abuse.
Scotland national lockdown means all hair salons and hair businesses on the Scottish mainland must close from Tuesday 5 January
In an earlier statement on Monday 4 January, Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced a national lockdown for Scotland effective from 00:01 Tuesday 4 January.
New laws will require people to stay at home and work from home where possible, which means all hairdressing and barbering businesses must close. Outdoor gatherings are also to be cut back, with people only allowed to meet one person from one other household.
The new rules in Scotland will apply across the Scottish mainland until at least the end of January, and will be kept under review.
However, hair salons and businesses can still operate in Scottish island areas as these will remain in level three but these areas will be monitored carefully.
The areas where hair and barbering businesses can still operate are:
- Orkney
- Shetland
- Na h-Eileanan Siar (Western Isles)
- The following islands within Argyll and Bute: Coll, Colonsay, Erraid, Gometra, Iona, Islay, Jura, Mull, Oronsay, Tiree, and Ulva
- All islands in Highland, with the exception of Skye, which comes within the national restrictions.
She explained she was more concerned about the current situation than she has been at any time since March last year as the new Coronavirus strain accounts for half of new cases.
She added the steeply rising trend of infections was threatening to put significant pressure on NHS services and hospitals could breach capacity within three to four weeks.
