Moving on from the perennially popular Heidi or halo braid, plaited updos offer an elegant, grown-up choice for proms, supper parties and beach holidays alike.
The style works well with all hair types, although fine hair will require preparation to stay put - and last. The flattering off-the-face finish suits most face shapes, opening up the eyes and elongating the cheekbones for a chiselled finish.
This look is also perfect for summer, keeping flyaways and frizz firmly away from the face and safe from humidity and heat damage.
Here are our favourite celebrity takes on the trend...

Busy Phillips
"I love this look. Plaits are a great trend for the summer months and Busy looks amazing with hair pulled from the face in this French-style braid. It highlights the blonde tones in her hair and would be fantastic as a day-to-evening look. Busy looks fabulous!"
Martin Cole, Klickers, Rugby
Dame Helen Mirren
"Plaits are having a revival this season and lots of collections at fashion week featured them, thanks in part to influences from other cultures and international street styles. Helen Mirren wears this halo braid in a classic, sophisticated way becoming of her age and status - but this style could also be worn with more texture for a dramatic feel. Plaits are also a great base for hair-up and Mohawk styles, especially on long curls or wavy hair."
Ian Davies, Ocean Hairdressing, Cardiff

Freida Pinto
"Plaits look set to continue as a big trend for the Spring/Summer 2012 season, thanks to shows like Valentino demonstrating the style on the catwalk. Freida is bang on trend with this updo, working with more of a head-hugging shape and an internal plait around the head. This look suits her, perfectly complementing her face shape and flattering her petite features."
Darren Bain, HOB Salons Camden, London
Jennifer Morrison
"Scalp plaits like Jennifer's will be a massive hit this Spring/Summer as it's a simple, yet effective style and makes a real statement. Her colour is right on trend too, with the golden hues merging with soft coffee colour tones, complementing her flawless complexion."
Ben Kristian, Zullo & Holland, Nottingham
