Celebrity hair masters and disasters of 2008

Published 28th Dec 2008 by sophieh

Celebville has been awash with celebrity hair stories in 2008, with Posh turning her posse into bobbed clones and then opting for a pixie crop so dramatic that it even outshone J-Lo.

Elsewhere there's been a celeb-wide throwing out of the straightening irons; as the stars of the big and small screens bade farewell to poker straight hair and said hello to volume and loose, tousled waves.

At the other end of the spectrum were the wannabe blonde bombshells, who actually just bombed. These are our masters and disasters in the celebrity hair stakes in 2008.

Celebrity Hair Heroes of 2008

British star Anna conquered America in 2008 and her style has also been bang on trend.

"Anna has a versatile look. Updos really suit her; she tends to wear her hair loosely pinned up with a wispy, side-swept fringe, adding a youthful, yet glamorous look," says Claudio Contrasti from Contrasti London.

Newcomer of the year Duffy has won a wealth of accolades for her music and her Dusty Springfield-esque style has got us salivating too.

"Duffy's Dusty Springfield-inspired hair is bang on trend. The use of multi-tones, such as sheer beige, warm blonde and disco gold all complement her complexion and enliven her sweetheart features," says Jayson Gray, international technical creative director from TONI & GUY.

Gwyneth-Paltrow.jpg

Gwyneth Paltrow

Award-winning actress Gwyneth followed the bob trend and lost her locks, but both her looks rock.

"Keeping her long bob simple with subtle layers gives Gwyneth maximum versatility. Her soft tousled curls are a fantastic look," says Nadine Woolard from Aveda Institute, Marylebone High Street, London.

heidi-klum.jpg

Heidi Klum

Graceful and beautiful, Heidi's stylish updo really made her the queen of the Oscars ball.

"Sporting a high bun with eye-catching detail, Heidi's sophisticated look exudes catwalk chic. A perfect balance of warm heather and beige blonde, Heidi's hair colour is naturally blended for an elegant style," says Akin Konizi from hob salons

Victoria Beckham

Love her or loathe her, Posh made headlines once again when she chopped off her Hollywood mane and opted for a cute pixie crop.

"No matter what people say about her, Victoria is setting the hair trends. I admire the fact she has gone against Hollywood's idealistic long, flowing locks and opted for such a drastic hairstyle. She stands out from her fellow LA stars," says Rob Eaton from Russell Eaton, Barnsley, Yorkshire.

Cate-Blanchett.jpg Cate Blanchett

Australian beauty Cate's acting awards include two Golden Globes and two BAFTA's. Cate definitely deserves an award for keeping up her look.

"Cate has a style that is relaxed, but polished. Whether it's hair, make-up or fashion, it's all tastefully done," adds Andrew Barton, Saks artistic director.
Kate-Nash.jpg

Kate Nash

Kate built the foundations for her pop success in 2008, along with her style.

"Kate's dishevelled, layered look and bold, heavy fringe look great with her strong cheekbones," says Clive Johnson from Clive Alexander, Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh.

Celebrity Hair Villains of 2008

Naomi-Campbell.jpg

Naomi Campbell

Naomi knows all about negative headlines about her behaviour; but when her hairline parted to reveal an unsightly 'weave cleavage' for the first time it was her style that was questioned.

"It looks like Naomi is suffering from traction alopecia which is hair loss on the hairline. It is a common symptom from wearing weaves and is primarily caused by the braids and weaves being too tight," says Michelle Louise Sultan from Hype Coiffure Battersea.

Amy-Winehouse-blonde-hair.jpg

Amy Winehouse

Amy made constant headlines in 2008, mainly for the wrong reasons. One of her many not-so-clever moves was turning her dark, black locks blonde.

"Unfortunately, the tones are still rather yellow. To lift her hair colour that much is very difficult, and I'm afraid she won't be having much fun with her hair if she doesn't look after it - such a drastic colour change is high maintenance," says Yesmin O'Brien, creative director at seanhanna salons, Surrey.

Natalie-Imbruglia.jpg

Natalie Imbruglia

Natalie's colour transformation has to be one of the worst this decade, let alone this year. It's completely wrong on the usually gorgeous Natalie and just proves how the wrong hair colour can totally transform your look.

"She looks hideous as a blonde - like a middle-aged woman. The combination of blonde with bad roots and that style is really ageing," agrees Lisa Shepherd from Lisa Shepherd Salons, Kidderminster.

katie-holmes.jpg

Katie Holmes

It's debatable whether Mrs Tom Cruise's bob is a good look or not, but it's probably too dull for a young girl with cash to splash.

"This look is all about layers while ensuring the outer edges remain soft. Leaving length at the front and texture in the remaining hair, this style screams casual and is far too boring for a young woman," says Claire Dawson, hob salons, London

Lily-Allen.jpg

Lily Allen

Lily seemed to be in the papers more for her hair colour than her music this year, going full spectrum from a gorgeous dark brown to blonde to shocking pink, and then back to brunette.

"Going blonde from a colour as dark as Lily's is no easy task, even for the most experienced colourist. If you're hair is already coloured it may not be possible to get the desired result in one go," says Karine Jackson of Karine Jackson, London.
