British hairdresser of the year nominees uncovered

There are eight nominees for HJ's British Hairdresser of the Year 2009, who we got to know a little better with a series of quick-fire questions.

Akin Konizi

Akin is HJ's current British Hairdresser of the Year and one of the founders of London and Hertfordshire-based group hob salons. His work has appeared around the world, and as part of the award-winning art team, he has taken his precise style around the globe demonstrating to thousands of hairdressers.

What are your strengths?

My focus and my stubborn disposition. I won't compromise or give up until I get what I want.

What is your weakness?

I am headstrong. I don't listen and I work too hard.

If you weren't a hairdresser what would you do?

I love styling models on our shows so I would probably be a stylist or fashion designer.

Probably a fashion designer.

Angelo Seminara

Angelo is one of the most creative hairdressers in the world, following in his mentor's footsteps, Trevor Sorbie. His eye for detail and creating the weird and wonderful has seen his vision copied and admired by hairdressers everywhere.

What are your strengths?

I'm very determined and passionate about my job.

What is your weakness?

Lack of sleep. I hate sleeping as I have so many other things to do.

If you weren't a hairdresser what would you do?

I would be a chef or architect.

Errol Douglas started his career 25 years ago and is owner of one of the most popular salons in London. A favourite with celebrities and hairdressers, Errol's infectious personality has led him to travel the world presenting seminars demonstrating his latest techniques.

What is your biggest strength?

My photography.

What is your biggest weakness?

I can be really impatient.

If you weren't a hairdresser what would you do?

Either a designer or architect. I love structure and building shapes - so maybe a brickie!

Gary Hooker and Michael Young

Gary Hooker and Michael Young

Together, Gary Hooker and Michael Young are a force to be reckoned with, winning a host of awards. Their stunning salons in the North East are a haven for luxury, and they are known for creating images of glamorous, beautiful and feminine women.

What are your strengths?

Gary: I am the Jack of all trades and can turn my hand to anything

Michael: Gary.

What are your weaknesses?

Gary: Michael!

Michael: Impatience.

If you weren't hairdressers what would you do?

Gary: I would rescue animals.

Michael: I'm a drama queen so something on stage, performing or singing.

What three words best describe you?

Gary: Happy, creative, passionate.

Michael: Loyal, happy, complicated.

Lisa Shepherd

Lisa Shepherd

Lisa is one of a handful of women who have won HJ's British Hairdresser of the Year. One of the country's top colourists, she works tirelessly promoting colour as an amazing career choice.

What is your strength?

Colour - it's in my DNA.

What is your weakness?

Shoes!

If you weren't a hairdresser what would you do?

Something creative like make-up or design.

What three words best describe you?

Nuts, whirlwind, loyal.

Mark Hayes

Mark Hayes

Mark is one of the most respected hairdressers of his generation, and his work with Sassoon Academy is admired around the world. His precision and geometric cutting is copied and studied by thousands of hairdressers. 

What is your strength?

Impatience.

What is your weakness?

Impatience.

If you weren't a hairdresser what would you do?

When I was a kid I wanted to be a footballer, then an architect, then a jewellery designer. Maybe I would have an allotment and be a gardener -  something completely opposite to what I do now.

What three words best describe you?

Impatient, honest, creative.

What is your strength?

Recognising peoples weaknesses.

What is your weakness?

I spend too much money!

If you weren't a hairdresser what would you do?

When I was younger I wanted to be a policeman or a pop star.
