Braids were the key hair trend on the red carpet at the Met Gala 2014, with a host of guests updating their evening gowns with the most modern of updos. Here are some of our favourites!

Emma Stone paired her fun and flirty
pink Thakoon crop top and skirt combo with a loose braid, with the band wrapped in a thick strand of hair. Worn side-parted and slung over one shoulder, this is a relaxed style but it definitely works with her easy, breezy take on evening wear.

Chloe Sevigny is one of fashion's risk-takers, which is why we love her so much. She didn't disappoint on this occasion, pairing her
neon print Kenzo gown with equally edgy boxer braids and face-framing veil of hair.

Gabrielle Union was one of several guests who took a risk with a crop top, and she also opted to go high with her hair. Textured halo braids add a hint of softness to this otherwise sexy look, making for an overall darkly romantic mood.

If Janelle Monae isn't in a hat, we can pretty much guarantee that she'll be doing something great with her hair. This occasion was no exception. Taking My Little Pony as her inspiration, seemingly, the braid swoops across her forehead and down the back for Rapunzel-worthy lengths.

Joan Smalls opted for a minimal take on the trend, with a skinny fishtail braid swung over one should. This style is a great way to show off the ombre colour in Joan's hair - and the tones work perfectly with her gown too.

Kristen Stewart gave her new colour its red-carpet debut, opting to style the deep red hue with a messy fishtail plait. Pairing a Chanel gown with this messy, textured 'do is pure KStew at her best and breathes a real sense of modernity to a classic couture piece.

Lily Allen opted for a voluminous updo, wrapping a chunky braid around her head for a new twist on the classic halo braid. Although it's hard to see the detail on her dark hair, this intricate look is a pretty alternative to a classic updo and works perfectly with the boat neckline on her Chanel dress.
