Bespoke salon for billericay

Education should be at the heart of any successful salon, and at Headlines Hairdressing in Billericay, training is well and truly at the centre of the business.

One of five salons in an Essex-based chain, the large upper floor of this sophisticated space operates as a training academy from Monday to Wednesday, educating more than 25 of the company's apprentices at any one time.

Headlines Hairdressing moved into the former estate agents building in 1996, but chose to undertake an £85,000 refit in February this year to increase space and fully integrate with the company's corporate salon colour scheme and in-house style.

Now with 27 styling stations downstairs, as well as a separate backwash area, there's plenty of room for both students and clients. Upstairs there are a further 10 stations as well as two extra backwash units - ideal for when the floor operates as the 'Colour Zone' from Thursday to Saturday.

"I would describe the salon as sleek, chic and approachable," says Simon. "We've created a tranquil, relaxing atmosphere within our busy salon - we're extremely happy with how the refit has turned out."

In Brief

What was the most expensive part of the refit?

The furniture, basins and chairs

What was the best bargain?

The starcase - just changing to a glass balastrade completely lifted the whole salon.

What are your top five tips for other salons embarking on a refit?

  • Plan everything, right down to the tiniest detail
  • Set a budget and stick to it - don't get carried away.
  • Give your clients and staff plenty of notice.
  • Keep the phone numbers of your workmen to hand for the week after you open, in case of any problems.
  • You can never have enough people helping the night before re-opening to restock and clean.

Decor

A simple, chic colour scheme incorporating rich shades of brown is used throughout thw salon. Warm walnut furniture contrasts against classic cream walls.

Reception

The well-lit reception area is presided over by two full-time receptionists. Bespoke retail units in complementary walnut co-ordinate with the desk and maintain the salon colour scheme. Flowers and fragrance diffusers complete the welcoming feel.

Flooring

Two shades of contrasting light and dark Karndean provide practical and easy-to-clean flooring that is regularly buffed for maximum shine.

Backwashes

The main backwash area is located behind a bespoke glass screen with a shattered effect.

Styling Stations

Each combine a bespoke wooden unit with a comfortable brown leather chair. The fitted units each house hidden storage and feature a practical glass shelf.
