Andrew Barton has debuted his Beehives, Bobs and Blowdries exhibition with lead sponsor L’Orèal Professionnel in his hometown of Barnsley.
The project was created in collaboration with fashion research consultant and academic Donna Bevan to explore the key hairstyles and technological innovations from the 1950s onwards.
The exhibition highlights the cultural significance of hair fashion, hair styling techniques and celebrity hairdressing and displays the role that hair has played in society and pop culture.
On the exciting opening, Andrew said: “There is an amazing story to be told about hair and hairdressing, its meaning and its importance to fashion and identity. This is a professional dream come true for me to be involved in this unique project and collaborate with such talented co curators to bring this project to life. My work as a hairdresser whether it be salon or catwalk photo shoot or presenting education has always been influenced by key moments in the history of hairdressing and the fashion influences so it’s an honour to bring these inspirations together in Beehives Bobs & Blowdries”.
L’Oréal Professionnel's general manager Monica Teodoro said: “Over the course of its first
century, L’Oréal established itself as the leader in the hair-care market, not just through the
development of new products, but also through its knowledge of the hair-care sector and its support
of hair-stylists around the world. This ongoing commitment to education and training of hair-care
professionals reflects the legacy of L’Oréal’s founder, Eugène Schueller, who prioritised the notion of
service to his Industry. Because of this heritage, L’Oréal Professionnel, the leading manufacturer of
professional colour, hair-care and styling products, is proud to support this exhibition. Hair has
always been a hugely important fashion statement, as can be seen in Beehives, Bobs and Blow-
dries.”
Beehives, Bobs and Blowdries outlines the advancements in design, technology and creativity and also looks forward to the future of hair and salon design. An additional part of the exhibition with a special Barnsley focus, will look at the importance of hairdressing in the community and the impact of some of the most renowned local salons including items from key local archives
The exhibition charts the cultural and economic shifts in trends using archival photography and modern and historical objects from collections, including Unilever, Coty, Inc, Sassoon and Dome Hair Products. The exhibition will run in Barnsley until 7 April before touring across the UK.
