Basic Feng Shui for your Salon

Published 07th Jan 2025 by hjiadmin

Did you know that feng shui can have a place in your salon? Whether it’s the flowers that you display or the music that you play, a more enlightened approach to business is no longer seen as strange – in fact, some of the most successful salons in the country have looked to feng shui for interior inspiration.

We caught up with Louise Curran, founder of Blossom with Feng Shui, to find out more…

Why Incorporate Feng Shui Techniques into your Salon Design?

“Feng shui is the art of creating balance and harmony in your space to enhance energy flow and support abundance and success,” explains Louise. “Applying this ancient Chinese practice in your salon can boost sales, attract more clients, improve employee retention and foster happier, more productive teams. It’s about creating an environment that feels good for everyone – clients, staff and yourself.

“At its heart, feng shui focuses on arranging your surroundings to promote chi: positive energy. From fixing leaks to optimising lighting and choosing the right colours, each element plays a role in shaping the vibe of your space. Think of it like acupuncture for your business. Working with a feng shui consultant allows you to go deeper – identifying the ideal spots for your reception, till and staff areas, as well as aligning your salon’s energy with your team’s strengths.”

Louise adds that with feng shui, you’re not just designing a salon; you’re crafting a space for harmony, growth, and lasting prosperity.

Tips to Incorporate Feng Shui Techniques into your Salon Design

It’s in the Details “Your salon is more than just a workspace – it’s the heart of your business. Small details like cracks in walls, flickering bulbs, or dripping taps can impact more than you think, symbolising issues like stress, burnout or financial drain,” explains Louise. “Fixing these quickly keeps your salon feeling fresh and positive, setting the tone for success.”

First Impressions Count “The entrance is the first impression clients have of your salon business, and it’s a big one; in fact, it makes up around 40% of the salon’s feng shui.” Louise suggests: “Keep it clear, freshly painted, and welcoming. If you can, add potted plants on either side of the door – they’re a lovely touch that brings life and energy to the space.”

Light Talks “Lighting is key – not just for creating beautiful styles but for the mood of your salon.” While Louise explains natural lighting is ideal, she adds that full-spectrum bulbs at each station can work wonders, too. She advises: “Think about zones: soft, dim lighting in the backwash area for a calming vibe and brighter accent lighting around retail displays to draw attention.”

Say Not to Fake Plants “Set the tone with soft colours, uplifting music and fresh flowers. Flowers bring a sense of growth, beauty and positivity, but steer clear of cacti – they give off a sharp energy – and avoid fake/dried flowers, which can represent decay.”

Invite Abundance “Finally, try adding a wealth bowl in the south-east corner, as this area is all based around prosperity,” says Louise. “Fill it with coins and crystals (like Pyrite, known for clearing financial blockages) to invite abundance into your salon and keep the good energy flowing.”
