Anne Veck and her team recently opened up their salon on a Sunday for a long-term client who is volunteering for the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust in South Africa.
The Oxford salon raised over £1,000 for Rebekka Stredwick, who will be heading to South Africa for three years to work for the AIDS charity. From February, she will help provide support HIV/AIDS testing, counselling, physiotherapy and palliative care, as well as community and school HIV-prevention awareness.
Although the salon is closed on a Sunday usually, Anne and the team worked for free, charging £20 per cut and donating all proceeds to Rebekka's cause. With five stylists working full-time, the salon was fully-booked all day and more than £1,000 was raised.
Anne says: "When you think that Rebekka will spend the next three years travelling around the rugged landscape of South Africa helping people, we felt it was so important to show our support to this amazing lady in the best way we know how - with hair! So we put the feelers out, and before we knew it, we were fully booked. It just goes to show how amazing the Oxford community is."
All of the proceeds from the day, as well as a forthcoming raffle and an extra salon date due to popular demand, will go straight to Rebekka, and will go to cover the costs of her flights, as well as towards buying a second hand car to travel around the Valley of 1000 Hills, where most of her work will be based.
