After 11 years of entering the awards,  Junior Green was named the Afro Hairdresser of the Year 2011 at HJ's British Hairdressing Awards.

We caught up with Junior and discovered that preparations for his sultry collection didn't exactly go to plan...

Junior-Afro.jpgWhy did you decide to enter the British Hairdressing Awards?

I have been entering the awards for the last 11 years as they are one of the most important accolades a hairdresser can win.

When did you start thinking about your collection?

I normally start to think about next year's entry straight after the awards night in November. I start collecting tear sheets in January to February and that is when the preparation really begins.

How did you find a photographer, stylist and makeup artist?

I found my photgrapher on a creative artist network website. His work was outstanding. This year I ended up doing two shot. I wasn't able to use the first shoot so I decided to re-shoot with just over a week to go before the closing date. For this reason I ended up styling the shoot myself! The make-up artist used came recommended and I was someone I had worked with in the past.

Tell us a little about your models. What do you look for in a hair model? How did you source them and how much did they cost?

As a rule, I always use professional models as they can make or break your shoot. I look for models who have great hair and skin. They must be able to work the camera and also capable of displaying various facial expressions.

How long did it take from the day of the shoot to sending off a collection you were happy with?

With this collection it was a week! I had shot previously but e I was unable to use those images.

What three tips would you give to people considering entering the British Hairdressing Awards?

  • Research your photographer very carefully and ask as many questions as you feel you need to. You need to have a good rapport with them and it is worth speaking  to their previous clients as well.
  • See all models beforehand to make sure that their hair is the same as when you booked them. You do not want any surprises on the day.
  • Make sure that everyone involved in the shoot is in synch with each other so the shoot can come together

How, if at all, will you be marketing your win in the salon?

We will be marketing it both in the salon and in the salon newsletter. The winning images are on display and we will also have new vinyl displays in the window.
