Jacob Martin has spent the past year being mentored by top industry talent as part of the British Barbers Association's Menspire Initiative. Matthew Batham found out how he'd enjoyed the experience.
You recently changed jobs, where are you working now?
I’m currently a stylist at Joe & Co, one of London’s top male barbers, based in the heart of Soho. I was recommended for the position after getting onto the MenSpire team and performing at Salon International.
What was your experience in barbering before this role?
I have been fortunate to have worked at various top salons throughout the West End. My two-year apprenticeship in barbering has shaped me into the stylist that I am today. I also did a stint in a local town barber shop. I’ve found there aren’t enough opportunities for young barbers to instil the core skills of barbering, which is why I feel so passionate about the MenSpire scheme.
What made you want to be a part of the MenSpire scheme?
The opportunity to be taught by key individuals in the profession that I am so passionate about. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to meet and learn from barbers who have mastered the profession and share their willingness to pass on their knowledge to the next generation of barbers.
What was your first experience as part of the MenSpire team?
Taking part in Chris Foster’s hair tattooing class; it was amazing to be taught by one of the UK’s leading male hairdressing educators.
What have been the major highlights for you and why?
I have had so many highlights; having the opportunity to meet such amazing and talented hairdressers as Chris Foster, Erik Lander, Errol Douglas, Lloyd Hughes and Kevin Vorley, who have not only trained me, but have also become personal mentors. They’ve each given me their contact numbers so that I can call them and ask for advice on anything from training, to techniques, progression and more. It is such a privileged position to be in. All the educators have given their own time to nurture me and help me develop. Hopefully one day I’ll be one of the country’s top male hairdressers!
Other great highlights include presenting on the HJ Stage at Salon International as well as working with Chris Foster during session and catwalk work.
What have you learnt while taking part in MenSpire?
So much. I’ve had the opportunity to be taught by some of the country’s most talented hairdressers – to be able to use the knowledge they have acquired is priceless.
How has it helped you in your job and has it changed the way you work at all?
It has made me more confident, improved my cutting and made me even more passionate for this industry. It has also inspired me to continue to learn and grow. I’m always striving to better myself.
Would you advise other young barbers to apply to be a part of MenSpire?
Most definitely, this programme gives you a once in a lifetime opportunity to take part in projects and receive training you could only dream of. Any young barber should jump at this great programme.
