2011 manager of the year: kate wilson
Behind every successful salon and every happy team is a great manager.
Kate Wilson, of Trevor Sorbie, Brighton, proved she is just that by winning the accolade of Manager of the Year at HJ's 2011 British Hairdressing Business Awards.
Here is the story behind her Kate's winning entry.
How long have you been a salon manager?I have been a salon manager at Trevor Sorbie, Brighton since January 2003, but I had my first job as a salon manager when I was 20 and worked for what was then Crown Hairdressing. That was 23 years ago! I gave up managing for a while and worked creatively at L'Oréal and Trevor Sorbie, Covent Garden.
Do you still have a column? Is so, do you think this is important to being a good salon manager?
Yes, I still have a column, it is important as it stops you becoming blind to how things really are in your salon. It keeps you fresh and I love it! I would not give up hairdressing, it keeps you in touch with your team and helps them to know you know what you are talking about as you do their job, as well as running the business.
What makes a great salon manager?
Extreme hard work, passion, energy, commitment, love of people, flexible, honest, communication, a sense of humour and truly caring about the team business and brand.
What do you think makes you stand out from the other managers?
It is my constant belief that I can always do better. I love people. I make mistakes but always make sure I learn from them.
Who did you learn your management style from?
I believe that the worst managers are insecure, aggressive, assertive, bossy types. I have come across this type, and they micro manage bully and control, but always end up unsuccessful in the end.
The best people who have managed me and who I have learned from are:
- Peter Crown who, despite my young age, allowed me to run his large Brighton salon when I was only 20.
- Thea Brunton from L'Oreal Professionnel, who was a brilliant people manager. I watched her manage me and her team, she was really balanced and got the best out of her staff.
- Sue Haydon, who I have only worked with for three years, has a brilliant style and I love watching how these clever managers change and alter themselves in different situations.
I've also been inspired by Alan Austin Smith whose books and coaching were invaluable to me.
Describe your management technique in three words?
Direct, decisive, fair.
