Y2K Hair is Back: Here's How Your Clients Can Embrace The Trend

Published 25th Jul 2024 by Sian Jones

The resurgence of Y2K hair has brought back the bold and playful hairstyles that were at the peak of millennial pop-culture in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Think chunky highlights, hair gems and spiky updos.

"The '90s and early 2000s were fun, they were bright and bold, they were varied. It’s little wonder we are seeing a huge influence of this playful era in current fashions," says Colour Specialist, Kat McEwan. As the 00s fashion cycle comes back round again, this time we can enjoy a much more fashion-forward than cringe-worthy era. "Social media has given younger generations the chance to explore and experiment with style across many eras, and right now, Y2K is enjoying a resurgence," Teri Lowe, Creative Director at The Hair Surgery. Need some inspiration for your Y2K-loving clients? Here are some of our favourite hairstyles to get you started.

Chunky Highlights

"As a colourist, I am a big fan of the “grown-up” chunky highlights we’re now seeing. Colour blocking seems to be the evolution of those signature chunks," says Kat. Dua Lipa is giving noughties nostalgia with these thick, contrasting highlights - the hallmark of Y2K hair.

Flicked-Out Ends

Straight hair with the ends flicked outwards is a signature look from the 00s, giving a sleek yet playful vibe and celebs like Florence Pugh have brought it back to the red carpet with style this season.

Hair Gems

With the revival of butterfly clips, scrunchies and bandanas in full swing, it was only a matter of time before hair gems would stick (pardon the pun). This 00s trend is all about adding some glitz, glam and self-expression to any look - hair-up or down. We love this Get The Look from Justine Marjan

Volume and Texture

Volume is key for the ultimate Y2K hairstyle. Add some layers, teasing, and volumising products - or go the whole nine yards with some crimping to complete the aesthetic.

Spiky Updos and Half-Up Styles

Spiky updos, often with gelled tips or pieces sticking out, and half-up styles with hair framing the face have been given new life by stars including Megan Thee Stallion, Gigi Hadid and Millie Bobby Brown, who's half-up style is serving peak 00s nostalgia - Sabrina The Teenage Witch anyone? "I actually love the hot girl, slick-up do's with the spiky ends. They're so fun and chic—great for the summer. The twists, with cute accessories like butterfly clips are popular, but the new generation is making the style more baddie!" shares Teri.

Y2K Baby Braids

Stylists and celebs have upgraded baby braids in recent years with colourful beads and even tinsel for the festive season. "Cyclical fashion trends often bring back styles from the past, but with a modern twist. I'm excited about the side and zig-zag partings as well as microbraids," says Amy Viette at AV Tailored Therapies. We love Rihanna's modern twist on the classic Y2K baby braids for her Savage Sports campaign - paired with waist-length extensions it's definitely one for your clients add to their wishlist.
