World environment day

Leading up to this year's World Environment Day (5 June), Easydry (a supplier of eco-friendly disposable towels) is backing the United Nations in urging countries, companies and individuals to unite to combat climate change.

Since 1972, the UN has observed 5 June as World Environment Day to highlight the dramatic changes our lifestyle has on the planet, emphasising that we can slow and stop the devastation we are bringing.

Easydry is backing that campaign, calling on the hair and beauty industries to consider any changes that could be made to services to help reduce carbon footprint.

The company tries to practise what it preaches, producing its disposable towels using eco-friendly processes: every product in the range is made from certified renewable sources; the purifying process uses recycled water; all packaging is recyclable and biodegradable; and produce is shipped in large quantities to reduce waste and avoids air freight when it can. The end result is towels that are recyclable and 100% biodegradable within three months the company claims.

Easydry states: "Besides being an expensive, time-consuming hassle in the salon - eating up energy with laundering and especially drying - cotton towels are also an ecological disaster.  According to the Pesticide Action Network North America, conventionally grown cotton uses more insecticides than any other single crop. Each year, cotton producers use nearly $2.6 billion [£1.27 billion] worth of pesticides."
