Winning wisdom with toni stephenson

Toni Stephenson at Hooker & Young won HJ's North Eastern Hairdresser of the Year at the 2014 British Hairdressing Awards. We caught up with Toni to find out what a win meant to her. How did it feel to have finalised for the awards? It was mixed feelings on the day. My fellow competitors at Hooker & Young received their letters a day before I received mine, so initially the morning was gutting. It wasn't until mid-day that my boss Michael Young rang to say it was announced online. I think he was deafened when I started screaming down the phone. I was delighted! How did it feel when your name was announced as the winner? It was a bit numbing if I'm truthful. Everything you've prayed for and dreamt about becoming a reality. It didn't sink in until I came home the following evening and shared my success with my family. Naturally I was absolutely buzzing on the evening, but it did feel like a dream. Nothing can prepare you for Jayne Lewis-Orr calling out your name. All I remember hearing is "And the winner is...." Then the guys at Hooker & Young pouncing on me, cheering me on - it was so wonderful. Words really can’t describe the feeling of adrenaline you get as you walk up to the stage. It was truly amazing. What is the value of winning a British Hairdressing Award? The recognition for being awarded North Eastern Hairdresser of the Year is priceless. It means everything to me. All the hard work, the support you get from your existing clients and the new clients it brings to the salon and me. The award win has been phenomenal. Meeting the most successful and talented people in the industry, who openly share their knowledge... I feel truly blessed and grateful. What advice would you give to others when thinking of entering the awards? Put your heart and soul into it. Do your research. I always find a moodboard helps to keep your focus.
