Wigs: an instant new look

Last week I joined a group of journalists for a press event at the brand new Vicki Ullah Wig Boudoir in Harrods, and was stunned by what I learnt. Vicki quickly laid to rest the misconceptions many of us had held about wigs and hairpieces – that they’re old-fashioned, itchy and unattractive. Instead, one look at the styles on offer at the boutique showed how realistic, chic and easy to use today’s products are.And while Vicki’s often called upon by household-name celebrities who rely on her discreet hairpieces to add high-impact volume, colour or glamour, her real passion is helping women who have lost their hair through illness or medication to find their perfect wig. For me, as a lifelong blonde, trying a different look was great fun – although becoming an instant brunette threw me a little too far out of my comfort zone! However, when each journalist was invited to choose a wig to take home, I didn’t hesitate and plumped for a straight, blonde clip-in hairpiece to give me waist-length locks. Walking into the office the nexy day with hair any mermaid would envy certainly made the rest of the HJ team sit up and take notice – and even our own experts couldn’t believe the hair wasn’t my own! How have you tried hairpieces to change your clients’ looks, or your own? I’d love to hear your stories. Emma@HJi x
